'OITNB's Uzo Aduba Talks "Crazy Eyes"

by Alanna Bennett

We are quickly spiraling into Emmy time, which means many things. One of those things is that we're getting more inside looks into the mechanisms of our favorite characters as the actors who play them make the rounds talking about their Craft on the Emmy campaign trail. Thursday that featured Orange Is the New Black 's Uzo Aduba's Reddit AMA, in which she talked the nitty-gritty of playing Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren, what her least favorite part of being on the OITNB set is, and more. Spoiler alert: Uzo Aduba is great.

Though Orange Is the New Black is a show chock-full of break-out characters, there's no doubt that Aduba's "Crazy Eyes" is one of the most widely recognizable. In fact, Aduba's already won a Critics Choice Award for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy, and now she's up for a comparable award at the Emmys. Suzanne Warren is a character that could have easily stayed one-dimensional in the hands of another performer, but Aduba's fleshed her out into a complex, big-hearted woman who sees the world through the lens of a very unique type of innocence.

And if her AMA is any indication, Aduba really loves working on Orange Is the New Black. Here are some of the best questions and answers from her time on Reddit.

On transforming herself into "Crazy Eyes":

On depicting Suzanne's Mental Health Issues:

On her favorite and least favorite things about working on OITNB:

On representation in OITNB, particularly Laverne Cox's character:

On if she herself has "crazy eyes":

I would be remiss if I wrote a post about Suzanne without including one of her best moments:
