Kim, Please Stop Sending Women This Message

by Loretta Donelan

We hoped that it wouldn't happen again, but Kim Kardashian has posted yet another wistful photo from years ago. Though she didn't use the hashtag #SkinnyDays, the sentiment is the same. She captioned an old photo with: "#FBF ughhh I am 20 lbs lighter here! This was just 5 years ago! Ok I'm going back on my grind. I gotta get back here!"

It's OK to have fitness and weight loss goals, and it's admirable that the Kardashian sisters post about getting healthy and in shape. However, this kind of post contradicts the body confidence that Kim's Instagram so often promotes. She has posted tons of selfies with her amazing body, and she has said that she's "way sexier ever since having my daughter."

Wanting to be in better shape is a more than legit goal, but using old pictures to motivate that goal seems futile and unhealthy. Posting such a picture to Instagram sends a bad message to her fans, that young and super skinny is what we all should strive for. Her use of "ughhh" suggests a level of disgust that is disheartening, and her wish to be 20 pounds lighter seems constricting and harsh.

She's allowed to want to be skinnier, but she would be wise to consider her influence before posting such a goal to her followers. Also, focusing on the feeling of being in shape, rather than how it looks in a photo, is healthier and, in my opinion, way sexier.
