By now, you've probably seen at least a handful of friends — and perhaps even some famous people — on Facebook pour ice water over their heads. The Ice Bucket Challenge raises awareness for ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Though it might seem silly — and it is hilariously silly — the challenge has been instrumental in raising money for the cause. Since July 29, more than 70,000 donors have given $4 million to the ALS Association. But the icing on the cake may be the videos themselves, and all the wincing faces they inspire.

Basically, challenge participants have to record themselves dumping a bucket of ice water over their heads, but before they do so they challenge a handful of other people to also complete the task within 24 hours. If they don't take on the challenge, they have to donate $100 to an ALS organization of their choice. But since humanity can be really beautiful once in a while, people have been donating either way. And since the cause is such an important one — 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed every year — many famous faces have winced for the challenge too.
