Kate Mara Goes Soft and Sexy at the 2014 Emmys

by Mary Avant

Despite having a distinctly classic sense of style, there’s something I adore about celebrities who can hit the red carpet in looks that push the envelope and go just a little bit edgier than your typical glamorous gown. That’s just one of the reasons I’ve always been a huge fan of Kate Mara (the other has to do with Mara’s dramatic and shocking role on House of Cards , of course).

Much like her sister Rooney, the actress embodies that cool-girl, dark-and-dramatic style in a way that lets Mara get away with wearing ensembles like a badass beaded Dolce & Gabbana mini at the Tony Awards or a dramatically patterned Valentino gown at the 2014 Met Gala.

So you can probably imagine why I was little surprised when I saw Mara step onto the 2014 Emmys red carpet in a draped J. Mendel gown. At first glance, her flowing, white number looks just a bit too safe and simple for Mara's typical taste. But upon closer inspection, the gown's subtle cutouts and intricate wrap detailing — not to mention the pearl and crystal–drenched neckline and Thalé Blanc pearl clutch — combine to create the kind of not-your-average ensemble Mara has become a pro at sporting on the red carpet.

And can we just take a second to admire that flawless red bob?
