His Ice Bucket Challenge Had Some Special Guests

by Kadeen Griffiths

To be perfectly honest, I assumed that Leonardo DiCaprio would be one of the celebrities who never did the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Not because he's taking a stand against ALS animal testing like Pamela Anderson, but because getting a bucket of ice cold water dumped over his head might bring on way too many Titanic flashbacks, you know? David Beckham may have nominated DiCaprio but that didn't mean DiCaprio wanted to visit those dark days in his career when he was every teenager's favorite heartthrob when he could just donate money instead. However, DiCaprio's ice bucket challenge video has finally arrived and it's even more socially conscious than your average ice bucket challenge video.

As it turns out, DiCaprio was already busy doing charity work when he decided to film his ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video. According to his Facebook message, DiCaprio is up at Lake Athabasca in Canada, learning about tar sands. He took the challenge along with Chief Adam of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Chief Courtoreille of the Mikisew Cree First Nation, and The Sierra Club President Michael Brune. As if that wasn't enough, on behalf of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, DiCaprio donated a whopping $100,000 to the ALS Foundation, proving that no one does it quite like the Great Gatsby. The full message on DiCaprio's Facebook page reads:

Hello from Lake Athabasca, we're here learning about the Canadian tar sands. We took a moment to join the #IceBucketChallenge movement in support of the ALS Association. My friends Chief Adam of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation challenges Dave Collyer president of Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, Chief Courtoreille of the Mikisew Cree First Nation challenges Mark Little of Suncor Canada and The Sierra Club President Michael Brune challenges Shell CEO Ben van Beurden. And me? In addition to a donation from my foundation, I challenge Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

After allowing his friends to challenge others first, DiCaprio nominated Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to take the ALS Challenge next. It's probably about as likely as President Obama responding to Justin Bieber's ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but we can certainly dream. And we can certainly watch DiCaprio's Ice Bucket Challenge video below and try not to make too many Titanic jokes while we do so.
