Katniss' 'Mockingjay' Poster is Ominous

by Alanna Bennett

Katniss Everdeen's been relatively absent from the first burst of promotional materials for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 . Of the many teaser trailers and character posters, Jennifer Lawrence has only been present for one trailer — and not even for much of that. Lionsgate's just released the film's first Katniss character poster, though, and it's showing us Katniss in the midst of her Mockingjay glory.

One of the more fascinating journeys in the Mockingjay novel is the one that follows Katniss as the people around her try to force her into the hero mold — and the ways in which she navigates and subverts those expectations to find her own definitions of what it means to fight for cause.

The Mockinjay uniform, which we see here from the back in its precision and its wingedness, is a symbol of the more heavily controlled aspect of Katniss' life. The tagline, though — "I am. I will," as we heard her say in that aforementioned trailer — is much more indicative of Katniss herself. She's a rebel in the truest form, after all: She'll fight for your cause as long as it's her cause as well, and she'll do it her own way every time she can get away with it.
