Whoa — Elle Has A Brand New 'Do

by Mary Avant

Celebrity makeovers always seem to go one of three ways: really well; mediocre and almost imperceptible (like, "Hey, there's something different about Demi Lovato this week, but I can't quite put my finger on it."); and downright terrible. Fortunately, Elle Fanning's new brown hair falls 100 percent on the "really well" side. And though I'm sure we've all come to love the charming starlet's signature blonde locks — after all, they do lend quite the innocent, sweet, and angelic sense to nearly everything she wears, whether it's an ethereal Alexander McQueen nightgown or a stunning floral-print mini dress from Christopher Kane — there's something about her new blunt, lobbed 'do that most definitely says, "Watch out, I'm finally growing up."

Debuting her fresh, middle-parted crop and moodier color at the Los Angeles premiere of the new animated film The Boxtrolls , Fanning paired her makeover with a sophisticated, all-black look from Oscar de la Renta. With its strapless, peplum, and bow tie-adorned top and its floor-sweeping trousers that show off her impossibly long legs, the ensemble was a noticeably darker and more mature look than we're accustomed to seeing from the rapidly-on-the-rise star. And though I wouldn't want her to grow up too quickly (I'd miss those cute and playful minis too much), it's fun to see the young Fanning show off a different side of her style and beauty personality.

Despite its more serious vibe, Fanning does manage to keep her ensemble and new look youthful and fresh thanks to a pared-down makeup look, which she's been known to sport on the occasions when she isn't wearing awesome stuff like yellow eyeliner.

Whether she'll keep this look for long, we'll just have to wait and see. And enjoy the more sophisticated looks that come along with it, of course.
