VMAs 2013: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Shock No One With Win, But Touch Everyone
Sure, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis had little competition in the Best Video with a Social Message category — their "Same Love" gay marriage anthem reached fever pitch during a summer that saw dramatic social change — but their win was still one of the most thrilling of the night. Two months after the Supreme Court shot down DOMA and California's Proposition 8, the duo picked up their Moon Man, and still managed to not lose sight of what really matters during a night that was previously taken over by Miley Cyrus' crotch.
Started Macklemore after taking the stage with Ryan Lewis, "Out of every single song that I have ever written, to me, this is the most important record out of all of them." Millions would agree with the musician — and millions helped make "Same Love" the first Top 40 hit to celebrate gay marriage. Hello warm fuzzies!
Noting that the song surged to fame when the nation was "at the forefront of equality," the musician continued to spread the message of "Same Love," telling the live and TV audience, "Gay rights are human rights. There is no separation."
If only every VMA win could be as inspiring as Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' win.
