Well, This Music Video Is A Lot

by Kristie Rohwedder

I'd been warned via Gchat about the music video for Maroon 5’s “Animals,” aka That Song With The Terrifying Lyrics. And I've expected madness from the vid ever since I saw that photograph of Adam Levine and wife Behati Prinsloo covered in blood on set. Even so, as I sat down to watch the music video for the first time Monday afternoon, I was not prepared for what I was about to put into my eyes.

Right out the gate, the music video sets the stage with the following series of images: A butcher shop, blood runs down a wall, a meat cleaver, rain, Adam Levine in a hairnet and glasses handling raw meat, a hand reaching for a back, a camera, Prinsloo in various states of undress, and a stack of developed photographs.

This will not end well, I thought. This will not end well at all.

I was right.

In the music video for “Animals,” Levine plays a bespectacled butcher who stalks Prinsloo. He photographs her while she sleeps. He spends a lot of time in a meat locker. He thinks about her as he caresses giant sides of beef hanging from meathooks. He rubs animal blood on his bare torso. He follows her to a nightclub. He fantasizes about doing the deed with Prinsloo. In said fantasy (at least, I think it's a fantasy), blood rains down on Prinsloo and Levine. It's a lot.

The true "highlight," however, is this moment:

Yes, that is Adam Levine hugging an enormous cut of raw meat as it swings from a hook.

The runner-up:

A blood-stained Adam Levine howls in a meat locker.

Quite frankly, I do not have the emotional energy to unpack this meaty music video (womp womp). There is too much to digest (womp womp). Watch the NSFW vid here... IF YOU DARE:
