Go All Westeros This Halloween

by Christine DiStasio

How badly are you missing Game of Thrones right now? Probably pretty badly because, like me, you can't understand why HBO wouldn't air a series with the tagline, "Winter is Coming," in the fall when winter is actually coming. So, short of harassing George R.R. Martin on the Internet, the next best way of totally super-fanning out about the HBO series this month would be to put together your very own Game of Thrones Halloween costume. I know, you're thinking, "Hell yeah, I want a Daenerys Targaryen Halloween costume," and that's cool, because she's totally amazing. But there SO many other worthy characters in Westeros to dress up as for Halloween 2014 and it's pretty easy to put these costumes together.

But who will you be? There are so many GoT characters to choose from that honestly — and I'm not ashamed to admit it — I have trouble remembering who they all are from time to time. So I can obviously understand that you're having serious trouble deciding, what with being blinded by the the idea of carrying around plastic dragons all night and all. Sure, Khaleesi is a great costume, but you'll probably be one of five other Khaleesi all at the same party. So I'm here to offer you a little variety with these five other, equally as awesome Game of Thrones Halloween costume ideas.

Jaime Lannister

Who wouldn't want to be a guy with a golden hand. Sure, you'd have to pretend that you can't use said hand for a night, but who cares? Gilded body parts are so in right now in Westeros and this look is pretty easy to achieve. Pair these two pieces with a red turtleneck and a fake sword and you're the Kingslayer.

Beige Faux-Leather Jacket

If you already own a rocking, beige leather or faux-leather jacket, you're pretty much good to go. But if you don't, you can purchase this faux-leather jacket with a similar neckline to Jaime's for $18 on Amazon.

Gold Glove

You can get this pair of gilded gloves for only $9.90 plus shipping from WholesaleHalloweenCostumes.com. Obviously you only need to wear one — but did you really need me to tell you that?

Jon Snow

All black everything, ladies and gents.

Black Faux-Leather Jacket

This faux-leather jacket is only $18 at Forever 21. Which is an absolute steal for something you could totally wear again.

Black Faux-Fur Vest

A Jon Snow costume might be the most fashion-forward costume you can rock this Halloween. Layer this $35 faux-fur vest from Amazon over the leather jacket to achieve the ultimate North of The Wall look.

Permanently Confused/Pained Expression

No Jon Snow costume would be complete without his signature sad and confused expression — bonus points if you take every opportunity possible to say, "I am not a Stark."

Margaery Tyrell

Game of Thrones is full of badass women — I mean, Daenerys is awesome, but have you seen Margaery Tyrell? She rocks cutouts better than any woman on television and she's one tough queen to put up with Joffrey's crap just to climb to the top of the Westeros food chain. Here's what you'll need to be Margaery for Halloween, along with a killer attitude that you're going to rule them all.

Cutouts

You can purchase Margaery Tyrell replica costumes on Etsy for a pretty penny, but this midi dress from Abercrombie & Fitch with a very Tyrell back cut-out will only cost you $21.60 and a little bit of time to hot-glue some beads and sequins.

Sequins

Easily recreate the vine detailing on Margaery's gown with this spool of sequin trim on Amazon and a hot-glue gun.

Crazy Hair

If you want a basic tutorial for getting Margaery's crazy wedding hair, this video is perfect. Add voluminous curls as needed.

Arya Stark

Arya was the stand-out character in Game of Thrones Season 4 and an absolute badass to rival Daenerys and Margaery. She might not be fighting for the throne, but she's fighting for her life and that's equally awesome. Pair these items with a pair of grey jeans and you've got an instant Arya Stark costume as long as you turn up the attitude.

Open-Knit Sweater

At $20, you won't feel terrible about cutting the sleeves off and roughing up this sweater from Forever 21. Pile on the layers and tie a belt around it and you'll be able to achieve Arya's bulky, on-the-run look that doubles as protection from attacks.

Fake Sword

No Arya costume would be complete without Needle, her trusty sword. You can get a pack of 12 20" swords on Amazon. You know, just in case you lose one or everyone you know is also dressing up as someone from GoT this year.

Face Paint

Arya's been on the run for what feels like years so, naturally, she's a little worse for wear. You're going to have to dirty yourself up to be believable with this Classic Snazaroo Face Paint on Amazon.

Oberyn Martell (RIP)

May the gods rest his soul. You want to pay homage to the GoT character that was gone too soon? Well, look no further, because here's everything you need to create a successful Red Viper costume.

Bloody Eye Makeup

Don Post Red Blood Makeup, $9, Amazon

It still hurts to think about how The Mountain killed Oberyn by literally gouging his eyes out. But if you're going to make this costume work, you're just going to have to get over it. Use this face make up, available on Amazon, to make it look like someone just dug their fingers in your eye sockets, without the pain of course.

Long, Golden Cardigan

For $5.99 you can't beat the price of this long cardigan on sale at Amazon. It even has a design around the neckline, so you don't have to worry about jazzing it up too much to make it look like Oberyn's. Just pair it with a brown faux-leather belt like this one and you're good to go.

Sun Appliques

Iron-on Sun Patch, $2, eBay

You can purchase these iron-on sun appliques from Ebay for $2 each. I'd suggest getting 10 or so to achieve the ultimate Red Viper look.
