From 'Annabelle' to 'Chucky' 9 Of The Creepiest Dolls In Pop Culture

To the shock of many, Annabelle has performed surprisingly well at the box office, beating the highly anticipated Gone Girl (for a moment) to general surprise. Maybe it's because Annabelle seems like more of a classic horror film to watch in anticipation of Halloween. I also think it has to do with the fact that it features one of the scariest horror tropes: the creepy doll.

Seeing Annabelle reminded me of other dolls that have scared me in movies and television. What is it about the creepy doll that makes it return over and over in pop culture? Perhaps it's the contrast of evil with the innocence of a child's plaything. The doll is what's supposed to comfort you when there's a monster under the bed, not try to kill you in your sleep. There's also something creepy about the lifeless rendering of the human form.

Bustle has already found some of the creepiest real life dolls to haunt your dreams, but that's not good enough for us. To celebrate Annabelle's success and the spooky month of October, here are the spookiest dolls in pop culture.

Talky Tina from 'The Twilight Zone'

One of the scariest moments I have ever seen in a Twilight Zone episode was when this doll said “My name is Talky Tina, and I’m going go kill you.”

The Clown Toy in 'Poltergeist'

I would say that dolls are only second to clowns in horror movie appearances. Poltergeist combined both into one horrifying scene.

Evil dolls in 'Barbarella'

Evil children and evil dolls unite in attacking Jane Fonda. It’s awesome/terrifying.

The Baby in 'Toy Story'

The baby/spider hybrid in Toy Story means well, but is sooo creepy looking.

These 'Doctor Who' Dolls

Both terrifying and kind of beautful, these large dolls appeared in the Doctor Who episode “Night Terrors.”

The Puppet from 'Saw'

Jigsaw uses this creepy puppet to communicate with his victims.

Annabelle from 'The Conjuring' and 'Annabelle'

Annabelle was so scary that she inspired her own movie.

Chucky

Chucky is the classic spooky doll, a serial killer stuck in an almost cute doll’s body.

The dolls in "Dolls"

Though I haven’t seen this film, it’s devoted to how scary dolls are. A group of people end up trapped in a house filled with evil toys, of course.
