If Buying Condoms Was Like Buying Birth Control...

by Alanna Greco

Ever feel a pang of annoyance that you have to remember to take your birth control pills once a day, at the same time every day, while all a guy has to do to practice safe sex is saunter into a drug store and grab a box of condoms?

Well, Buzzfeed has made a video titled “If Buying Condoms Was Like Buying Birth Control” that captures the stark imbalance of what males versus females have to do to keep their sex safe. There are so many more barriers for women, including talking with parents, meeting with a doctor, having to go through an uncomfortable exam, and sometimes paying high prices for the prescription…what if guys had to do the same to get their Trojans? When the guy in the video has his condom prescription run out, he has an infuriating conversation with his partner about sharing the responsibility of birth control, to which she replies “But baby, then it won’t feel as good”…a frustrating argument that men think is a legitimate excuse to leave women with the burden of finding a birth control method besides condoms.

There is, of course, a good reason that women have to go through doctors to get a prescription for birth control, but process shouldn’t be so complicated. Not to mention that there can also be shame involved with women taking birth control pills — sometimes charmingly referred to as “slut pills” — while I’m sure that most men aren’t the least bit ashamed to buy condoms, signaling to everyone in the CVS that he is getting some.

So until male birth control becomes a reality, this is the world that we are stuck in. Watch the video below and prepare to shake your head in disappointment.
