Why Did Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes Name Their Baby Esmeralda Amada? Here's Why Their Daughter Possibly Has the Unique Name — REPORT
Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes might still not have confirmed that they're the parents of a newborn baby, whether through a direct interview or a personal statement, but we have almost definitive proof now. TMZ allegedly acquired a copy of the birth certificate revealing the name of their girl: Esmeralda Amada Gosling. It's ironic that we can have a baby name when Mendes and Gosling have yet to even confirm the pregnancy, but, trust me, I am not complaining. But why would they name the baby Esmeralda Amada? It could be because of two movies.
Esmeralda, TMZ points out, could be an obvious reference to the Disney film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The leading lady of the film was a Romani woman named Esmeralda, with whom Quasimodo fell in love and for whom he rebelled against his abusive guardian. I have no idea whether it's Gosling or Mendes who is a big fan of the Disney film, but I must compliment them on their taste. After all, Esmeralda was a boss, fighting for truth and justice and the rights of her people.
There's also the fact that Esmeralda and Eva begin with the same letter, which is a naming pattern that many parents love to follow. On the other hand, Amada is far from Disney-inspired. It’s the name of Mendes’ character from her 2007 film We Own the Night. The criminal drama featured Mendes as Amada Juarez, the girlfriend of Mark Wahlberg, and both of them lived a hedonistic life with Wahlberg’s in-universe best friend before the plot kicked in.
Symbolically, Esmeralda is a name of Spanish origin that means “emerald” and Amada is a Latin name that means “lovable”, as well as the Spanish version of the name Amanda. If Mendes and Gosling really named their child Esmeralda Amada, or lovable emerald, then that’s just about the most adorable thing I’ve ever heard of. Even better, unlike many celebrity names out there, it’s unique enough to be memorable but not so out there as to be completely unrelatable. And that describes both Mendes and Gosling, low-key and private as they are, to a T. If I were giving out awards for best celebrity baby name, Esmeralda Amada would definitely make the top ten.
