5 Reasons You'll Love 'Jane the Virgin'

by Danielle Santola

What do you get when you mix a distracted gynecologist with a sperm sample and two very different patients? An unusual mistake and a whole lot of inevitable drama. When Jane the Virgin premieres on Monday night, it will be the first ever accidental insemination to hit weeknight television and I'm seriously looking forward to it. The new CW series is certainly raising some curiosity. I mean, a pregnant virgin? How could you not be interested? Add a beautiful and talented protagonist to the extraordinary storyline and you’ve got yourself a hit. If you weren’t planning on tuning in, think again — there are too many reasons to watch for anyone to miss out on this one.

The one-hour drama is so much more than just the freak accident that leaves Jane Villanueva pregnant with someone else’s child. It has the heart, passion, comedy, and drama that every popular series aims for. By partnering Jane with The Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals, The CW set up what is bound to be an extremely successful Monday night. Jane is likely to capture the hearts of anyone looking for a light-hearted, charming, and unusual story to obsess over. If you still don't believe me, here are five reasons that will not only convince you to watch Jane the Virgin, but prove that it'll be your new favorite show.

GINA RODRIGUEZ IS “THE NEXT BIG THING”

The 29-year-old actress who plays Jane is one of the biggest breakout stars of the season and definitely someone to watch. The Hollywood Reporter called Rodriguez the "next big thing" because she not only is she beautiful and talented, but she is also reportedly genuine and charming — basically someone you'd want to be friends with in real life. Her entertaining and bubbly personality will shine through the screen and I promise you'll find yourself craving more Rodriguez.

It HAS A REFRESHINGLY UNIQUE PREMISE

Rodriguez told E! Online that people are often thrown off by the premise of the show, but the truth of the matter is that Jane came just in time. There can only be so many shows about doctors and vampires and stereotypical love triangles. But a pregnant virgin — that's a new one. If nothing else, you have to admit that it's intriguing.

IT BRINGS A MUCH NEEDED CHANGE TO THE REPRESENTATION OF LATINOS ON TV

When asked about her career goals, Rodriguez consistently says that she wants to change the way the world perceives Latino Americans. Her role as Jane is inspirational and empowering to say the least, and is certainly far from any of the stereotypes often found in the media. In her E! interview, Rodriguez expressed her belief that the industry looks at Latinos like they come from a completely different world, when they are really like every other American. Her mission with Jane is to change that view.

YOU’LL CRUSH ON HER BOYFRIEND & HER BABY DADDY

No one will be more surprised about Jane's pregnancy than her super cute and supportive boyfriend, Michael. For a while now she's been waiting to have sex, so when the virgin shows up at his door step pregnant, you can only imagine his reaction. Even more dreamy, though, is the hotel owner whose sperm was used to impregnate Jane. The sample was meant for his wife, but evidently his child is now inside Jane (who secretly had a crush on him at some point). Drama, drama, drama.

IT’S ONE OF THE MOST PROMISING HOURS OF FALL TV

When The Hollywood Reporter featured Rodriguez as "The Next Big Thing," it was partly because of her genuine want for sending a message to young girls. Jane's story is unique, but it all comes down to the idea that she is "imperfectly perfect," just like everybody else. She's an ordinary girl chasing her dreams — she just also happens to get accidentally artificially inseminated. Could you ask for a more engrossing story to follow every week?
