What the Future's Nostalgia Parties Will Look Like

Since the early 2000s, “‘80s parties” have been all the rage with generations who may or may not actually be old enough to remember the ‘80s. The same soon became true of the ‘90s… but have you ever stopped to wonder what the nostalgia parties of the future — those flashing back to the 2000s and 2010s — might look like? I hadn’t… until today. And, as always, I have Reddit to thank for that. Or maybe to curse for that. I’m honestly not sure yet.

Late last night, Redditor DontTellMyLandlord posed the following question to AskReddit: “When our kids have their 2000’s and 2010’s theme parties, what will the hilariously outdated but iconic clothes and music be?” Over the course of the thread’s lifespan, it naturally involved to include just about any trend you can possibly think of: Clothes and music, yes, but also sayings and philosophies, food and drink items, accessories, and even Internet phenomena. Although some maintain that some trends will still be alive and well by the time we hit that point (skinny jeans, I’m looking at you), it’s still funny how the trappings of the present can so quickly become obsolete, is it not?

When you have your 2000s and 2010 parties, what will you break out of the vaults? Here are a few suggestions:

1. Arbitrary Social Media Conventions

#hashtags #on #everything #especially #your #selfies.

2. Anything Involving “Swag”

See also: “YOLO.”

3. Memes

Wait — hang on a minute:

There. Fixed that for you.

4. Y2K

One Redditor actually asked someone to explain what Y2K was to him/her. This is how I know I’m getting old.

5. Beards

But not just any beards. “Fake, absurd beards.” On everyone, no less. I’d also like to add “drawing mustaches on your finger and holding it under your nose.”

6. A Cheesy and Obnoxious Group Dance

Spot. On.

7. The Basic Bitch Uniform

I’m sure the term “Basic Bitch” will also be out in full force at ‘10s nostalgia parties.

8. Seasonal Coffee Drinks

I mean, if we’re doing the whole “Basic Bitch” thing anyway….

9. An Appropriate Playlist

Various suggestions include Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Pitt Bull. I'm pretty sure Miley Cyrus will also have a place there, along with "Let It Go" from Frozen.

10. Fedoras

I’m going to take this moment to note that cheap, ugly, mass-produced fedoras are ruining fine, vintage fedoras for everyone else. Just sayin'.

11. Beats

Sorry, Dre.

12. T-Shirts, But Not for the Reason You Think

I don’t know why this submission has been downvoted into negativity, because I think it’s brilliant. But maybe that’s just me.
