Victoria Beckham Wins British Fashion Award For Best Brand, And The Accolade Is Well-Deserved
The British Fashion Awards were held tonight at the London Coliseum, and it was an eventful evening. New BFFs Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne stunned on the red carpet, John Galliano presented Anna Wintour with her British Fashion Council Outstanding Achievement Award, and last year's British Style Award winner Harry Styles relinquished his title to a well-deserving Emma Watson. One of the most notable moments of the evening, though, was Victoria Beckham's win for Best Designer Brand.
Although the other two nominated brands, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen, are admirable British fashion industry mainstays as well, I think Beckham deserved the nod more than anyone. Since The Spice Girls' "Wannabe" skyrocketed to the top of the charts in 1996, Beckham, AKA Posh Spice, has excelled in every role she's been in, from pop star to soccer wife to model to muse. But as deep as my run loves for the '90s glory that was The Spice Girls, my favorite phase of V. Beck's life has been her designer stage.
Since Beckham launched her Spring/Summer 2009 line six years ago, which consisted of only dresses, she's built the Victoria Beckham brand up to be synonymous with class, chicness, and enduring style. What I love about her designs is that they're sexy but sweetly feminine. Her designs are structured but far from boring, fitted but not trashy.
Not only is Beckham a fantastic designer; she's also a savvy businesswoman. Her Posh Spice past and marriage to David may have put her in the spotlight, but in truth, those things may have worked against her fashion career. Beckham had to work to push the pop-star-turned-soccer-wife image aside to pursue her designer dreams, and she's clearly succeeded. When I think of Victoria Beckham, my first thought isn't of her scantily-clad singer days or of her super-sexy hubster (although I admit that I feel the stinging bite of jealousy when I remember that.) I think of her not only as one of the most well-dressed women in the world, but as someone who dresses the other best-dressed women of the world.
Obviously, The British Fashion Council echoes my sentiments. This isn't the first time they've recognized Beckham's industry prowess, either — she won the award in 2011, too. So congrats, Victoria. What a well-deserved award.
