Lady Mary's Having a Rough Time in 'Downton Abbey'

by Tanya Ghahremani

Though the full-length trailer for the new season of Downton Abbey seemed relatively upbeat, it's not all going to be all happy-go-lucky for everyone — when we return to Downton, Lady Mary Crawley is still dealing with the death of her beloved husband, Matthew Crawley, and, judging by this first clip, it looks like six months later, she hasn't made much progress with grieving.

In the clip, we see Lady Mary still requesting to wear black anywhere she goes — a sign that she is still in mourning — and refusing to face the now six-month-old child she had with Matthew, going so far as to call him a "poor orphan." When it's pointed out to her that the child is not an orphan because she is still alive, Mary scoffs, coldly: "He isn't poor either, come to that." Yes, this clip will definitely make you feel some feelings.

As previously reported, the new season of Downton Abbey won't premiere in the U.S. until Jan. 15, 2014 (on PBS' Masterpiece Theater), but, for the Internet savvy of you all, the episode will premiere in the UK on Sept. 22, on ITV. You can check out the clip below.
