5 Unique Fashion Themes for a New Year's Eve Party Everyone Will Remember — Aren't We All Tired of Dressing Like Our Favorite Animals?

I absolutely adore New Year's Eve. It is the one night of the year that I really, truly look forward to, and it never fails to disappoint. I have spent the 31st of December with friends, family, strangers and even by myself in the past few years. And regardless of what I'm doing, I always enjoy it. I have given it some thought, and I honestly think my partiality to the holiday that so many people loathe is down to New Year's Eve being all about one thing: hope. Hope that the coming year will be a good one, that it is a fresh start, that you get to make (and break) countless resolutions. And there is something about all that that I just find so warming.

I don't mind spending New Year's alone. In fact, I have done this two or three times now and it hasn't been a problem at all. I have relaxed in a nice, hot bath, with a nice, cold glass of white wine, a good book and plenty of bubbles; and it's been simply divine. But I truly love a party. Preferably with good friends, plenty of food and booze, silly costumes, loud music and tons of laughter. I love rushing outside ready to count down to midnight with everyone, and, of course, exchanging hugs and kisses with them once we have shouted the long-awaited "HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

But onto the elements of the actual parties. We have all been to New Year's Eve festivities before, obviously. And the themes are generally pretty predictable: come as your favorite movie character; come as a gangster; come as your favorite animal/Disney princess/food; and so on and so forth. So this year, how about coming up with a theme you haven't seen before? Here are some ideas for you. Maybe they'll help you love New Year's as much as I do!

Drag Inspired by RuPaul and Her Drag Racers

With Season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race coming soon (yay!), why not have a double celebration by dressing as your favourite queen? If you’re feeling particularly brave, you could even set is as a challenge to your guests to make their own outfits from typical New Year’s decorations and regalia. Note: You should recommend that they stock up on hot glue if you go down this road.

Bring an Awkward Childhood Photo Back to Life

Have your guests pick out a photograph of themselves from their childhood. Their goal is to recreate the outfit they wore in the image (as closely as possible!). If you have guests who are attending as a family, they could even dress as their favorite forced family photo!

100 Years of Beauty in One Party

Assign your guests a decade and have them dress in the fashions of the last century. For help with their hair and makeup, they can turn to the 100 Years of Beauty in 1 Minute video for inspiration.

If you’re an admirer of the avant-garde couture of this renowned fashion house, you could encourage your guests to select their favorite piece by McQueen himself, and attempt to make a version of it for themselves. If nothing else, this will be a laugh!

Fashion Faux Pas

For a quick and easy theme that everyone can get on board with, how about having them dress terribly? There are plenty of common fashion mistakes out there (personally, my costume would involve cheap leggings that show off whatever terrible underwear I’m wearing, teamed with high heels I can’t walk in). Anyone else?
