16 Unnecessary Music Feuds That Made Both Celebrities Look Bad
When celebrities fight, they go hard — and no celebrities feud more intensely than musicians. Just ask Diplo after Lorde's sizzling burn in defense of Taylor Swift. Maybe it's the fact that these stars can pen their most intimate feelings into a song, or the fact that they're given a microphone as part of their job, but, when people in the music biz clash, you're definitely going to hear about it. So which singing, rapping, and recording stars clashed with their peers? Click through to find out.
Nicki Minaj
Though things between Idol judges Carey and Minaj started out amicable, it wasn’t long before rumors of jealousy and resentment started creeping in. Carey allegedly called Minaj a bitch during taping. Minaj said that Carey only wanted one female on the show. Carey said she was afraid of Minaj attacking her… the list goes on. Ultimately, it ended with neither artist returning to the show, which was probably a bit of a relief for everyone involved.
Madonna
It’s no secret that these two pop stars are often compared to one another, but Madonna’s not exactly flattered by the connection.
Lady Gaga
When asked about how Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” could have been inspired by Madonna’s song “Express Yourself,” the Material Girl responded by saying that she felt it was “reductive” — a.k.a., she wasn’t super impressed. Lady Gaga has since stated she’s not a fan of the way Madonna refuses to help younger artists in the industry.
Miley Cyrus
The “Wrecking Ball” singer did not like the advice this older celebrity was dishing out via Twitter.
Sinead O'Connor
After hearing that Cyrus compared her music video for “Wrecking Ball” — in which she appears naked — to O’Connor’s video for “Nothing Compares 2 U,” O’Connor went on a Twitter tirade. She warned Cyrus against being exploited by the music industry, and Cyrus lashed back with what can only be described as a digital eye roll. O’Connor has since penned four open letters to the singer, none of which appear to be taken very seriously by the former Hannah Montana.
Drake
In classic celebrity style, this feud started at a nightclub.
Chris Brown
According to reports, Drake and Brown got into a heated fight at a nightclub in NYC after Drake taunted Brown about hooking up with Brown’s ex, Rihanna. Five people were injured during the alleged brawl.
Taylor Swift
Burning Taylor Swift? Any one of her ex-boyfriends could tell you that’s a mistake.
Katy Perry
Swift is allegedly “straight-up enemies” with Katy Perry, who, according to rumors, stole a bunch of the “Blank Space” singer’s dancers from her tour. Swift admitted to Rolling Stone that she penned her song “Bad Blood” about a fight between her and an anonymous pop singer, but sources say that the diss song is about the “Dark Horse” singer’s sneaky ways.
Ellie Goulding
A relationship gone sour caused this feud between the “Burn” singer and her ex.
Ed Sheeran
Sheeran allegedly caught Goulding cheating on him with Niall Horan of One Direction, which led to him penning his bitter breakup hit “Don’t.”
Eric Church
The country singer sparked a feud when he insulted the judges and contestants on The Voice by saying anyone who participates on TV competition shows aren’t “real artists.”
Miranda Lambert
Lambert, who got her start competing on Nashville Star, tweeted her anger about Church’s comment, even saying “you’re welcome” for the tour that she brought him on. Church has since apologized for calling out competition singers.
Courtney Love
Love and her late husband’s bandmate had bad blood that was made all the worse by this bizarre accusation.
Dave Grohl
Love took to Twitter to accuse the former Nirvana guitarist of hitting on her daughter Francis Bean Cobain. Grohl’s publicist fired back at the former Hole singer, saying that the accusations were completely untrue and offensive. It wasn’t the first time that Love and Grohl had beef — Love never missed a shot at the Foo Fighters frontman, and the two often disagreed over financial issues connected to Nirvana.
Eminem
These two celebrities were obsessed with throwing shade at one another in the early ’00s.
Mariah Carey
Eminem opened up about having a relationship with Mariah Carey, whom he described as “clingy.” Carey fired back, saying that they never actually dated, and that, while they hung out briefly, they were never involved in a sexual relationship. Eminem got back at Carey for denying their former romance by playing voicemails allegedly from the singer at one of his concerts. Carey got him back by featuring a Slim Shady lookalike as the stalker in her music video for “Obsessed.” Real mature, guys.
The Wanted
This feud between these two popular boy bands had fans picking sides.
One Direction
No idea why the feud between these two groups started, but, for whatever reason it seems like The Wanted and One Direction absolutely loathe each other… at least, according to Twitter. One Direction’s Zayn Malik called Max George “chlamydia boy” via the social media platform, The Wanted’s Tom Parker accused 1D’s Louis Tomlinson of having a torrid affair with bandmate Harry Styles, and both bands dissed the other’s auditions for TV singing competitions. It would be terrible if it weren’t all so ridiculous.
Rihanna
The “Umbrella” singer got into a war of words with this pop artist.
Ciara
In 2011, the “One Two Step” singer said that Rihanna wasn’t particularly pleasant to her on an episode of E!’s Fashion Police. RiRi fired back, tweeting that maybe it was because she forgot to “tip” Ciara — ouch. Ciara has since told a radio show that while she has no idea what’s really going with Rihanna, she seems a little bit “crazy.”
Lindsay Lohan
It seemed like the notoriously troubled actress was itching to sue someone when she started beef with this rapper.
Pitbull
The “Give Me Everything Tonight” rapper was probably shocked to find out that Lohan was suing him for using her name in the track. The offending lyric? “I’ve got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan.” A judge has since thrown out the lawsuit.
Drake Bell
The singer and former Drake & Josh star called Beliebers to action when he insulted their idol.
Justin Bieber
Pink
Pink and another one of the “Lady Marmalade” singers didn’t exactly hit it off.
Christina Aguilera
According to PopCrush, Pink was pissed that the “Genie In A Bottle” singer’s manager demanded that Aguilera have the biggest part on the “Lady Marmalade” track. She recently told Ryan Seacrest in an interview that her kids will not be attending any playdates with Aguilera’s.
The Dixie Chicks
The country group called out this singer for writing a song they deemed “ignorant.”
Toby Keith
The country crooner — who clearly didn’t share the Dixie Chicks negative feelings about then-President George W. Bush — responded to the Dixie Chicks’ backlash of his song “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” by doctoring a photo of member Natalie Maines with Saddam Hussein.
Deryck Whibley
The Sum 41 frontman took a shot at his pop star ex and her then-fiance.
Avril Lavigne & Chad Kroeger
Whibley and his girlfriend Ari Cooper poked fun at the “Sk8r Boi” singer and the Nickelback frontman by dressing up as them for Halloween. Kroeger’s response? That he would have went as Whibley, but unfortunately all of his parties had celebrity themes this year. (Burrrrrrn.)
