How Did Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz Meet? Their Journey from Love Triangle to Happily Married
Congratulations to Alicia Keys and her husband Swizz Beatz! Keys gave birth to their second child, a son named Genesis Ali Dean, on Saturday, Dec. 27. Of course, I'm very happy for the couple and I'm sure this baby is super adorable, but I find it hard to grasp that these two are together. Don't get me wrong, I have come come to think of them as a super cute couple. They just seem like the most random pairing to me. How did Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz even meet?
Keys is this sweet, piano playing, singer, and Beatz is a hip hop producer who's close friends with tough rapper DMX. Looking at them now they make sense as a couple, but how did that romance start? It could be a classic "opposites attract" scenario. A good girl singer softening the heart of a bad boy rapper, like some modern fairytale kind of romance. Was the attraction immediate? Did they get together in the studio? Was she giving him piano lessons or something? The beginning of their romance was shrouded in great secrecy for a long time. There was a lot of controversy and there are plenty of questions that need answers.
Did They Have a Teenage Love Affair?
Alicia Keys has said that they met when she was 16 and Swizz Beatz was 17. They were introduced by a mutual friend who apparently said, "Oh you gotta meet Swizz, and Alicia’s about to blow up and Swizz is doing his thing and maybe one day you’ll work together.” Well, isn't that cute?
But Did They Get Together at That Point?
Not quite. Keys was not so into the rapper. She told Marie Claire UK ,"Honestly, I didn't really like him that much. I thought he was too ostentatious." She added further insult to injury and said, "Everything with him is really over the top. I used to see him and think, 'He is so annoying.'" Ouch.
How Did Their Professional Relationship Start Out?
Alicia Keys was highly reluctant about getting in the studio with Swizz Beatz. She said, "I fought it tooth and nail. Why should I work with him? Finally, though, we did it and we had a ball." Talk about playing hard to get.
What's With All the Mystery in Their Relationship?
No one seems to know when they couple actually started dating. Their pairing was very private, to say the least. On top of that, it was a very complicated and allegedly scandalous. As far as we know, Keys started dating Beatz in 2008. This was pretty much confirmed in the remix for Drake's hit song "Best I Ever Had," when Swizz Beatz rapped, "She gave me a party at the Guggenheim … What’s next? The ring? The baby? She really loves me." For the record, Keys did throw him a surprise birthday party at the Guggenheim Museum. So this was a pretty clear confirmation at the time. Why the mysterious start? Swizz Beatz was still married to singer Mashonda.
Was There a Love Triangle? Love Square?
The timing of their relationship seemed very suspect to the public. When the two got together, Swizz Beatz was still married to singer Mashonda. Eventually Keys defended her relationship with Beatz by telling Jet, "[They] were apart for some time before we ever got together... that doesn't matter to those who take pleasure in trying to knock others down... there's no need to fight what's not true.”
Mashonda told a different story over the years in Twitter rants, open letters, and interviews about she did not feel "separated" from her husband, because they had just had a baby and were still in a sexual relationship. To make the situation even more complicated, Swizz Beatz had a baby with a third woman named Jahna Sabastian while married to Mashonda in 2008. In the heat of all this scandal, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz got married in 2009.
Is It All Good Now?
After that bevy of controversy in 2008, it seems like the drama is finally settling down. In March 2014, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, and Mashonda were spotted on vacation in Nikki Beach with their children. What a storied romance. It seems like they called a cease fire. Hopefully they continue this harmonious interaction with the new baby in the picture.
