Why Emily Blunt Should Win the Golden Globe

by Caitlyn Callegari

I like to consider myself a musical theater fan, but somehow, someway, I never made it to a performance of Into the Woods. I know, total blasphemy. In my defense, I had heard some recordings and covers of the songs, namely the well-known and beloved, "No One is Alone," but, as I sat my tush in a movie theater chair to see the film version of the musical, I didn't know what exactly awaited me. To my utter delight, I was more than pleasantly surprised at all 125 minutes of the whimsical film, and most of that is due to actress Emily Blunt. For this reason, it isn't at all surprising that Blunt is nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role. Truly, before seeing her in this film, her range and ability had gone somewhat under the radar for me. Thankfully, the critics haven’t been as blind as I have.

Just because she’s being considered for the accolade, unfortunately doesn’t mean that she’ll win the award. But, let me say this now and with total fervor: it’ll be a travesty if she doesn’t. Blunt stole the show in a variety of ways, but here are the most important reasons why she should win the Golden Globe.

1. She managed to have chemistry with everyone — including the trees

2. She can sing, and she put in some hard work in order to exact the notes as well as she did

3. Her subtlety and timing = comedic gold

4. She tackled the confusing task of playing a forlorn, childless woman while she was with child and totally sold it

5. She was able to suspend our disbelief and get us immersed in her story despite the campy, fantastical elements

So there you have it. Congrats in advance on the win, Emily.
