Meryl Streep Once Lost A Role For Being "Ugly"

by Sofia Barrett-Ibarria

It's difficult to imagine Meryl Streep as being anything other than The Almighty Goddess Meryl Streep, but according to Streep, she did not wake up like this. Reportedly, Streep has openly talked about feeling self-conscious about her looks and weight when she was younger, before she fully realized herself as the amazing piece of woman she is today. Apparently, somehow, there was a moment in time when Streep was not universally regarded as pure perfection, and she went on The Graham Norton Show to talk about some of her failed auditions.

Streep told a funny (but also kind of crushing) story about the time she lost a role for not being considered hot enough. Back in 1976 when she was still relatively unknown, Streep says she was introduced to Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis, Sr. by his son, who thought she'd be great as Dwan in King Kong. Apparently, De Laurentiis, Sr. threw a fit and was so offended by Streep's alleged ugliness that he asked his son, "Why do you bring me this ugly thing?" Streep, who speaks Italian, duh, responded super casually "I'm sorry I'm not beautiful enough to be in King Kong" because she loves all her haters.
