This Awkward Mess Is What It Would Look Like If You Were Actually Honest About Making Plans — VIDEO
Let's be real for a second: How often do we make up ridiculous excuses to get out of plans? I'm going to go ahead and say we do it a lot. However, this BuzzFeed video shows what it would look like if we were actually honest about skipping out hanging with our friends. We've all been there: Beating around the bush, grasping at straws for semi-believable excuses. But what would happen if we were just upfront about it? What would happen if we were just honest and said, "You know what? I just want to sit in my sweatpants and drink wine alone. I want to binge watch How I Met Your Mother for hours on end instead of enduring forced chatter at a party. Sorry, that's my life, these are my choices, and I'm not sorry." Because in all honesty, who wouldn't want to do all of that as much as possible?
But most of us don't do that. For the sake of not offending the people we love (and maybe even those we only kind of like), we fake-smile our way through white lies, shrug apologetically, and express our sincerest apologies at not being to stand in a crowded room while sipping cheap beer and enduring ear-pumping music. After all, it's worse to be seen as a jerk than it is a liar.
Maybe it's more considerate of other people to just be completely upfront and honest. "Hey, I don't want to go to your party because I would rather have a Dance Moms marathon. Have a great time!"
You know, if I'm being perfectly honest, that might not be met with the best reactions. Maybe it is better to tell some little white lies after all. If you're looking for ideas, here are 10 great excuses for getting out of things you just don't want to do:
1. "My dog ate my Taco Bell."
I tell people that "he's just super sick and gassy and I can't leave him alone" but in reality, I'm the one who ate my Taco Bell, with pretty much the same results.
2. "I have a Dungeons and Dragons game scheduled for that exact same time!"
To be honest, this might get you out of all future plans as well.
3. "I just watched The Notebook for the first time and now I need to sit alone in my room and cry forever."
This is TOTALLY believable (except the part about it being your first time).
4. "I'm scheduled to participate in a Beyoncé dance battle... with myself."
WHO WILL BE THE WINNER!? (Spoiler: It will be me.)
5. "I just found out I'm allergic to good times."
Since you're the one throwing the party, it's just going to be WAY too good for me attend. If I have a good time, I will probably break out in hives.
6. "I’m grounded."
Yup, my parents called to ground me for... not cleaning my apartment.
7. "My goldfish recently passed away."
I know he couldn't go anywhere, but he was still always there for me...
8. "I need to refurbish my upholstery."
What does that mean, you ask? No one knows—which is kind of the point.
9. "I have flan cooking in the oven and I can’t leave!"
You don't become a fancy chef overnight, you know.
10. "My knitting club is meeting at that same time."
Knitters gonna knit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
