Carly Rae Jepsen and NIN Mash-Up Is Disturbing

by Kat George

Prepare to be totally weirded out. Mash-up master YITT has made a mashup of Carly Rae Jepsen's "I Really Like You" and Nine Inch Nail's "Head Like A Hole". It's called, appropriately,"I Really Like A Hole". Weird, disturbing things start to happen when you pair Jepsen's saccharine sound with NIN's dark aggression. For comparison, Jepsen's lyrical chorus is, "I really really really really really really like you" where as NIN's is "Bow down before the one you serve/ You're going to get what you deserve." Carly Rae sings, "It's like everything you say is a sweet revelation", while NIN says, "Head like a hole/ Black as your soul/ I'd rather die than give you control." But hey, strong contrast always makes for a pleasing end result, so let's roll with it.

The weirdest thing about it is how it remains catchy. It's still to the beat of "I Really Like You", which might be why. However, it's a confusing mash-up nonetheless, as the Carly Rae and NIN brands couldn't be more polar in opposition to one another. It kind of reminds me of when Jay Z made music with Linkin Park. It shouldn't have worked (I mean, on paper it just looked stupid), but as much as you wanted to hate it, you just couldn't, because it was... not good, but... infectious. This is that. In case you don't quite get it, this is how different Carly Rae Jepsen and NIN are:

Listen to the mashup below:

Here are some other YITT mashups that shouldn't work but do:

1. Lady Gaga & Tegan and Sara: "Closer Applause"

2. Kelly Clarkson & The Police: "Catch My Breath You Take"

3. Tom Petty & Katy Perry: "Free Fallin Wide Awake"

4. Natalie Imbruglia & One Republic: "Torn Stare"

5. Beatles & Lana Del Rey: "Octopus' Sadness"
