Black Widow Is Coming To 'Saturday Night Live'

by Kadeen Griffiths

That Black Widow reign just won't let up. All right, so Scarlett Johansson is famous for a lot more than just being Black Widow in The Avengers, but that's the role that made a lot of late bloomers fall in love with her. Now, Johansson will be hosting Saturday Night Live in May — right after Avengers: Age of Ultron hits the theaters — and that's not the only reason to get excited. This is the fourth time that Johansson has hosted SNL, and the first time in five years. What does that mean? It means that Johansson hasn't hosted Saturday Night Live since she first donned her Black Widow costume for her appearance in Iron Man 2. Now the real question is how many Black Widow jokes they can fit into such a relatively short amount of time?

Although she might initially have been thought of as "the girl" on the Avengers team — and while there might still be some people out there who think of her as little outside of that phrase — the movies have devoted a lot of time to developing and deepening the character of Natasha Romanoff. Not only does she more than hold her own against her numerous male counterparts, but she's also such a fan favorite character that there is still considerable outcry for her to get her own movie. (Please, please, please.)

I've already got my fingers crossed that Johansson spends the entire show in full Black Widow gear, but I suppose that would be asking too much. After all, this is Johansson's show and not Black Widow's. I assume. But Black Widow steals every show (as Captain America learned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was more like The Black Widow Movie Starring Captain America), so I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like if she was the one hosting SNL this time around. It would certainly be... different.

1. She Would Be The Straight Man

Black Widow has a quieter sense of humor than the wacky antics that SNL is famous for. She's more sarcasm and dry wit than she is outrageous stunts and costume changes. She isn't lacking in a sense of humor — contrary to popular belief — but her skills would be better used as the one reacting to the insanity than the one participating in it. Just wouldn't feel authentic, you know?

2. All Of The Avengers Would Cameo

If there is anyone out there who doesn't think that Thor would jump at the chance to be on SNL once Jane explained to him what it was, then they are crazy. Tony would only agree to come if he could be the one hosting. Steve would have way too much fun once he got over being self-conscious about being in yet another ridiculous show in yet another ridiculous costume. Hawkeye would be wherever Black Widow is. Hulk... OK, maybe Hulk can wait outside.

3. She Would Shoot Down Those Hawkeye Romance Rumors

Leave it to Natasha Romanoff to take a moment to address those romance rumors about her and the other Avengers in one, long deadpan speech about how she's not dating Clint, or Tony, or Steve, or Bruce, or Thor, or the Hulk, or Happy Hogan, or Nick Fury or the guy who works at the deli down the block who always gives her a discount on her sandwiches, thank you very much.

4. She Would Teach Us All How To Fight

One sketch would revolve around Natasha's amazing fighting skills. It would be funny, yes, but viewers watching closely at home will notice that it can also act as a basic training video in self-defense. That way, you can make people laugh and then punch them in the solar plexus while they're distracted. Win/win.

5. This Would All Be A Mission

The only way I can see Black Widow 100 percent committing to her SNL stint would be if she was undercover on a mission of some kind. I have no idea what kind of mission would require her to broadcast her face to the entire country, but, hey, S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't a thing anymore and her records have gone public. Black Widow can do whatever she wants.
