These Songs Will Always Get Stuck In Your Head

by Tracy Dye

As a girl who spends a gross amount of time with her iTunes, I can't imagine what the world would be like without music. Music can help us amp up a workout, enhance scenes in television and cinema, and even help us get in touch with our emotions. Case-in-point, Michelle Branch's "Goodbye To You" really helped me get over that slice of pizza I missed out on at a party I arrived late to in 2000. With all the good that music brings, however, there's always one caveat: I'm talking about the times that a song's so catchy, it gets stuck in your head and take longer to exit our minds than Kanye West takes to exit a stage after Beyoncé loses out on an award. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to attend a yoga class with an instructor that keeps repeating the mantra "empty your mind" when you just finished listening to Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" for the first time?!

Of course you do, because we've all been there. Whether it's at work, in the car, in the shower, or even in your dreams, there are certain songs that we can't manage to exorcise from a mental replay no matter how hard we try. Below are 11 songs that will always get stuck in your head the moment you hear them:

The Spice Girls, "Wannabe"

The Spice Girls will tell you want they want, what they really, really want in this wildly popular tune from 1996. As much as I love this, what I really, really wanted during middle school was to get this out of my mind for at least two seconds.

Chumbawamba, "Tubthumping"

I don't remember "tubthumping" being an actual word or lyric in this song, but what I do remember is that incessant chorus. None of us want to "keep you down," Chumbawamba, but I might need to keep the volume of this song down to avoid having it replaying on my psyche for a good two days.

One Direction, "What Makes You Beautiful"

I know we're all still in mourning over Zayn Malik's departure from the band, so maybe having this early One Direction smash stuck in your head isn't such a bad thing.

NSYNC, "Bye Bye Bye"

Thanks to John Krasinski's epic rendition of this on Lip Sync Battle , "Bye Bye Bye" has been stuck in my head for ages now. Apparently, Krasinski also got the memo about this infectious track best being paired with marionette dance moves, because he nailed it.

Eiffel 65, "Blue (Da Ba Dee)"

I'm pretty sure this one has been stuck in my head since it first came out.

Aqua, "Barbie Girl"

Not only was this song almost impossible to get out of my mind, I was never able to look at Barbie dolls the same way again.

Baha Men, "Who Let The Dogs Out"

There's two things I never figured out:

  1. The person responsible for letting all those dogs out.
  2. How to stop humming this song at work and in class.

Britney Spears, "...Baby One More Time"

This song came out at only the beginning of a year where I would find myself unable to get countless Britney Spears songs out of my head. Does she have to be so catchy every time? I'm trying to clear my mind, over here!

Montell Jordan, "This Is How We Do It"

I had finally gotten this song out of my head... and then Step Brothers happened.

Semisonic, "Closing Time"

Yeah, I have this song stuck in my head way past closing time. Oh, and I figured out who I want to take me home. Did you really have to ask?:

Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe"

I'm pretty sure that at some point during this song's release we all joined a flash mob. Jepsen has an equally addictive song out now that keeps getting stuck in my mind. Luckily, I really, really, really, really, really like it.

OK, that's it. I think it's time for me to go do some karaoke.
