'90s Songs You & Your Parents Both Loved
Let's all take a moment to remember this special time we all have a memory of, in some form or another: A time when you would ride in the car, strapped in the backseat, while your parents gave a passionate rendition of Celine Dion's "The Heart Will Go On." You were too young to have a say in what your parents listened to in the car and hadn't reached the point of accepting your parents' weird quirks as endearing qualities: Your dad knew all the lyrics to "Ice, Ice, Baby," and you found this to be horrifyingly embarrassing. It might be a rare occurrence, but I can assure you, there is at least one song that both you and your parents love, or at least can mutually agree on — but, back when you were a kid, it was not this song.
When you reached your teen years and discovered that H-Town's "Knockin' Da Boots" was your ultimate jam (even though you had no idea what the song was about), though, your parents might have been quick to shut that down and awkwardly explain sometimes when two people love each other very much, they click their heels together three times and that's how babies are made. They'd switch back to Celine Dion, and you'd sulk in the passenger seat, trying to calculate how long it would take to save up enough money for a portable CD player.
Until you stopped riding around with your parents or moved out of the house, your parents' favorite music sometimes ended up being your favorite music by default, and sometimes, your parents' taste in '90s music kind of grew on you. Now, these songs remind you of your very '90s childhood, and I'm sure you still seek them out on YouTube, at least sometimes.
Vanilla Ice, "Ice Ice Baby"
OMG, DAD — you're embarrassing me!
B*Witched, "C'est La Vie"
One of the few pop songs allowed back when your parents still controlled the radio.
Hanson, "MMMBop"
You and your mom could both agree that the young men of Hanson were JUST DARLING.
Whitney Houston, "I Will Always Love You"
Your mom probably sang this one loudly in the car.
Haddaway, "What Is Love"
The song that made your dad want to TURN UP.
A*Teens, "Upside Down"
Your dad said he hated it, but deep down, this was his jam.
Toni Braxton, "Unbreak My Heart"
YAS KWEEN.
OMC, "How Bizarre"
A favorite of quirky, white dads everywhere.
Michael Jackson feat. Janet Jackson, "Scream"
The jam.
Seal, "Kiss From A Rose"
A song you pretended to hate... before you realized this song is everything.
Backstreet Boys, "I Want It That Way"
Because your mom had a crush on Nick Carter. Didn't we all?
