Web Series 'High Maintenance' Lights Up HBO

by Aramide Tinubu

The good folks at HBO sure know how to market their programming. I can recall the dragon shadows that popped up around New York City before the series premiere of Game of Thrones. More brilliant still was the campaign surrounding True Blood. This included blood samples, which were sent to horror bloggers, as well as huge posters advertising the synthetic Tru Blood drink. In keeping with that spirit HBO chose today, April 20th to announce their new series High Maintenance . From hubby/wife duo Ben Sinclair (The Big C) and Katja Blichfeld (30 Rock), the web series which began its run on Vimeo, follows a Brooklyn-based weed dealer and his eclectic group of clients.

April 20th is a day of celebration for cannabis enthusiasts. From the casual consumer to the more avid user, it is a day of commemoration and consummation. Deadline reports that the series teeters between the mundane to the completely unexpected, which I would assume is norm in the daily lives of recreational drug users. Today is only launch day so we can be sure that the marketing for the show should be absolutely bananas.

Notoriously tight-lipped, HBO isn't saying too much; but here's what we know thus far.

Past Episodes Will Be Available to View

HBO has ordered six new episodes of the series and the network will make the previous nineteen available via HBO, HBO GO and HBO NOW later this year. Until then, you can still catch the series on Vimeo.

Previous guest stars have already included Hannibal Buress (Broad City) and Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey). This can only mean that even more incredible stars will be vying for a guest spot.

HBO Is Pretty Thrilled About It

President of HBO Programming Michael Lomardo said, "We are thrilled to bring this sophisticated and clever series to our HBO audience."

They stated, “We have been growing this show organically for three years now, and we are elated to bring it into full maturity at HBO.”

High Maintenance Has Consistently Done Well

As one of the top-selling series for Vimeo On-Demand, High Maintenance also earned Sinclair and Blichfeld a Writers Guild of America award for their episode entitled 'Rachel'.

It Isn't The First Time HBO's Dealt With Pot

Jonathan Ames’ Bored To Death which ran from 2009-2011 focused on pot at length as well.

It's A Big Freakin' Big Deal

It's still pretty uncommon for a premium cable network to pick up an online series. Though its not unheard of, Showtime did it with their comedy Web Therapy, this means only good things for web series and content creators.
