S Club 7's "You" Music Video Is Very 'Mad Men'

by Kristie Rohwedder

I am a pop music fan of a certain age, so duh-doye, the S Club 7 reunion tour announcement had me raising the roof... for a moment. I stopped pushing my palms toward the ceiling the second I read that the English pop group will only be playing tour dates around the United Kingdom. Aw, bollocks. I do not live in the UK, so unless I stumble upon a pile of frequent flyer miles, I won't be seeing Tina Barrett, Paul Cattermole, Rachel Stevens, Olivia Miller, Hannah Spearritt, Bradley McIntosh, and Jon Lee in concert after all. (I guess I'll never have that dream come true.) So, I'm coping the only way I know how: by watching a bunch of S Club 7 music videos. And during my YouTube journey, I happened upon the "You" music video for the first time. The music video, which was released in 2002, blends a 1950s/1960s theme with a futuristic aesthetic. It's very Mad Men with a splash of The Jetsons. Very Don Draper goes to Space Mountain. V

Inspired by the scene in which S Club 7 frolics about a Draper penthouse-esque sunken living room, I thought it'd be fun to ask Dick Whitman what he thought of the futuristic '50s video. I called him into my office (aka my dining room) and jotted down what he said as he watched the clip. Here is what Don Draper had to say about the “You” music video:

D. DRAPER NOTE #1

"What sort of sorcery am I looking at? I should look into acquiring a bar cart that I can operate via remote control."

D. DRAPER NOTE #2

"Do the makers of this rocket drink blender need an ad man? I'll be their ad man. I already have a slogan. Rocketblend: For when you want to black out in a black hole."

D. DRAPER NOTE #3

"I can write personal checks for one million dollars and I don't have my own jetpack? What's the point of wealth, then? What's the point of anything?"

D. DRAPER NOTE #4

"I used to have a sunken living room full of furniture. I used to throw parties. I used to have friends. I used to smile."

D. DRAPER NOTE #5

[Dabs brow with handkerchief.] "I'm having serious Kenny Cosgrove flashbacks."

D. DRAPER NOTE #6

"I haven't mowed a lawn in a while, but this seems like an unproductive method of operations."

D. DRAPER NOTE #7

"This video is too shiny. You didn't warn me I'd need my sunglasses."

D. DRAPER NOTE #8

"Seriously, I'm too hungover for this music video."

D. DRAPER NOTE #9

"Youth is fleeting. As is joy. As is life."
