Abigail Sounds Off On Selena Gomez's Body Shamers

by Alexa Tucker

Preach it, girl. There were some strong words for the haters in Abigail Breslin's tumblr post defending Selena Gomez's weight, and we couldn't have said it better ourselves. It is absurd that people are being so nasty about the gorgeous star's bikini-clad curves. Here's to hoping that one of Selena's critics read Abigail's powerful comments, because she makes some spot-on points.

"All this stuff about Selena Gomez online in her bathing suit is RIDICULOUS," she says in the post. "Everyone is always saying how we shouldn’t judge each other, so why are you commenting on a gorgeous, talented and smart young girls body when she’s on the beach having fun with her friends AND SHE LOOKS AMAZING." And seriously, she does.

Abigail continues, "How are young girls supposed to grow up normally and not feel bad about themselves and not develop eating disorders if it’s literally national headline news that a THIN girl may or may not have put on a few pounds, and YET still remains THIN?" This part in particular felt especially strong to me. Really, how are we supposed to feel good about our bodies when someone who obviously works hard for her figure is still put down for looking like, well, a regular person?

My first thought on the situation was, well, if her weight is getting criticized, then people might mistake me for a beached whale in my swimsuit this summer. And that right there is why body shaming Selena is harmful not only to her, but to girls (and guys) everywhere. Because there's nothing wrong with her rockin' beach bod, there's nothing wrong with mine, and there's nothing wrong with anyone's, for that matter.

Props to Abigail for recognizing that this issue isn't just about Selena. It's never OK to judge someone's weight, whether they're a celebrity or not. People talking about how she looks in her bikini only moves us backwards in a movement to start being more body-positive, and it's a change many of us sorely need.

After calling out the offenders, Abigail had a message for Selena, too: "You look amazing and more importantly look like you’re having fun. Keep rocking those bikinis."

And from the looks of it, I think she'll be doing just that. Her response to the body bullies? Selena posted a sexy Instagram captioned "I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove." Yep, there's ton to love about Selena, and none of it has to do with what she looks like on vacation.
