What to hear something crazy? A few women were turned away from a gala movie screening at the Cannes Film Festival for wearing flats. The festival organizers insisted that dress code was "black tie and evening wear" — but it's 2015! Are we really still pretending that heels are the only appropriate shoe for formal events? The world is filled with fashionable flats, and the Cannes Film Festival needs to get on board with the idea.
The plot thickens with this story as the festival website mentions no regulation on heel height, however the rule was implemented by the festival's staff. In my mind, it seems a Cannes Film Festival attendee would know how to abide by a formal dress code. It's doubtful that a festival attendee would arrive in shoes more appropriate for a day at the beach rather than an elegant film festival.
Festival attendees took to Twitter to defend their choice of shoes. However, why does the subjectivity of appropriate shoes matter to the festival organizers? Flats are completely fashion-forward. Heel height does not regulate the level of style. Festival organizers need to get on board with the times, and realize that flats are a killer shoe choice. Here are a few reasons why flats are ALWAYS an acceptable choice.
1. They're Stylish
Not all flats were created equal. There are some that are simply out of this world.
2. No Sore Feet
Guess whose feet won't be throbbing by the end of the night? People wearing sequin loafers, that's whose.
3. Less Tripping
Accidents are way more avoidable in a stylish pair of flats.
4. Celebrities Love Them
Celebrities from Alexa Chung to Kate Hudson have embraced the flat shoe trend, so we should naturally all follow suit.
5. Royals Love Them Too
If it's good enough for the Queen, it's good enough for a film festival.
6. Confidence Boosters
While you should always rock what you got, sometimes you're just not in the mood to be super tall. Flats are here to help; they're better for your knees, anyway.
7. They Bring Out Your Creative Side
With all the fun patterns and wild shapes, flats let you get truly experimental with your style. Why not be bold and comfortable at the same time? Heels, you're sooo last century.
