16 Threesome Vocab Words You Have To Know

by Emma McGowan

When you think about threesomes, you probably think about that hot/disturbing scene in The Dreamers or like, the sexy person you’ve been secretly wishing would try to seduce both you and your partner. What you probably don’t think about is vocabulary. Yup, that’s right: vocabulary. There’s a whole mess of vernacular that goes along with getting it on with more than one person that you’re going to have to learn if you don’t want to sound like a noob. (See below for definition.)

Ménage à trois. Three way. Threesome. Even the act itself has multiple names! I don’t know what it is with kinksters and naming every damn thing but navigating the terminology is a necessary step in your threesome education. To help you along the way, I’ve compiled a list of terms that you may come across in your group sex adventures. Some of them are directly related to threesomes, specifically, and some are just some terms that may come up when you’re interacting with folks who like to play in that scene. Feel free to pepper them into everyday conversation as well like, “Because I didn’t want to come off like a noob in my first Devil’s Threeway, I made sure to set boundaries beforehand, like no DP.” Enjoy!

1. MMF

This stands for male/male/female and it’s a threesome that includes — you guessed it! — two dudes and a lady.

2. FMF

Every straight college boy’s fantasy: female/male/female threesome.

3. Devil’s Threesome/Three way

Another term for an MMF encounter.

4. Unicorn

A unicorn is a bisexual person — usually a woman, but not always — who’s down to get down with a male/female couple. She’s called a unicorn because she’s rare, hard to find, and everyone wants one — get it?

5. Guest star

The special guest star of a three way encounter is the person who is joining an established couple for some play time.

6. Cuckold

A cuckold is, in the strictest definition of the word, a man whose wife is cheating on him. When we relate it threesomes, cuckolds are guys who are turned on by the thought or sight of their female partner having sex with another man. Sometimes cuckolding is related to BDSM or humiliation play but not always.

7. Cuck queen

Female version of a cuckold. A woman who is turned on by the thought or sight of her partner with another woman.

8. GGG

Coined by sex advice expert Dan Savage, GGG stands for good, giving, and game. It means you should be good in bed, giving to all partners, and game for anything (within reason). Always make sure every participant in your threesome is GGG for maximum pleasure!

9. Polyamory

People who are polyamorous have romantic relationships with more than one person. Often those relationships are sexual in nature as well, but it’s not a requirement. They believe in having multiple loves in your life.

10. Play

In kink communities, “play” has a lot of meanings but is usually used as a euphemism for some kind of sexual activity. It’s often a preferred term because “sex” can kind of limiting in a world where we usually equate it with “penis in vagina.” Play can include BDSM activity, a three way, or whatever else consenting adults agree to!

11. Group play

Sex (or sexual activity) with more than one person!

12. Voyeur

Someone who likes to watch.

13. Exhibitionist

Someone who likes it when other people watch.

14. Boundaries

When you add more people to the sexual mix, things get much more complicated. Boundaries are what you’re willing to do — and what you aren’t. For an awesome threesome, make sure that boundaries are discussed before diving in.

15. Noob

An inexperienced person. Stands for “newbie.”

16. DP

Double penetration. When a person has penises inside two different orifices at the same time.
