A Couple Made In 'SYTYCD' Heaven

by Keertana Sastry

It's insane how many dancers have coupled up thanks to So You Think You Can Dance so far in the series' run. From Dominic "D-Ritz" Sandoval and Lauren Froderman's adorable romance that has inspired many a YouTube video, to the perfect marriage of Twitch and Allison Holker, SYTYCD is quite the hotbed of romance. Season 12 is no different as we were introduced to the new, engaged couple Kelly MacCoy and Tyrell Noll who auditioned for the stage and street teams, respectively. But unlike the other SYTYCD couples who met either in the Top 20/Top 10 competition, as alumni, or were already together when they auditioned for the show, MacCoy and Noll's romance is even more heavily tied to the show. The two dancers met in line while auditioning in Atlanta during Season 11 and got engaged after only meeting each other one other time from their first encounter. So will the couple make it through to the competition and beyond together?

I hate to be this person, but I don't know if their talent-levels are equal. 19-year-old MacCoy has an incredible force of talent inside of her that exploded onstage and made her ticket to Vegas an extremely easy decision for the judges. Noll however was a different story.

I personally thought his musicality was beautiful and he had some really great moments in his freestyle routine, but Nigel Lythgoe was not impressed. I don't know if Lythgoe's critique that there wasn't much dancing is totally correct, but I do think that his very unique and fascinating style of street dance was not as fully explored as it could be. I hope the couple does make it to the main competition together mostly because it would make for a great story, but Noll has quite a ways to go to really make a lasting impression.
