Is 'Pitch Perfect 3' Actually Happening Soon?

by Maggie Malach

Potentially aca-awesome news broke on June 10, as word got out that Pitch Perfect 3 is in the works. As a reminder, Pitch Perfect 2 just hit theaters and did, you know, preeeeetty well at the box office. Given the first movie's diehard fanbase, an additional sequel stands to be successful as well. While sources allegedly told The Hollywood Reporter that Kay Cannon is in negotiations to write Pitch Perfect 3, that doesn't guarantee Pitch Perfect 3 — even if she did write the first two films. Bustle reached out to Kay Cannon’s publicist for comment, but she said she was unaware of this rumor and could not confirm.

THR also suggested that the third movie might focus on Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson's characters post-graduation. However, the site does note that options for a third movie aren't in the actress' contracts, so they could negotiate hefty paydays. (To put things in perspective, Kendrick made somewhere in the neighborhood of "the low six-figures" for Pitch Perfect, while Wilson was paid less than $100,000. However, each star commanded about $2 million for the sequel.)

There's also the matter of Elizabeth Banks. The actress not only appeared in the first two movies, but she produced and directed the sequel. It makes sense that she would sign on to the third in some capacity. On June 4, Banks addressed the potential of a Pitch Perfect 3 , telling Access Hollywood, "We're thinking about it, we're thinking about it very seriously. Of course we're at the very beginning of that process. We would love to spend more time with these characters that everyone's fallen so hard in love with."

In summary, it sounds like there's definitely some interest in a third movie, at least as far as Banks is concerned, but, as of right now, there's no official confirmation on who will write the film and who will star in it. Back to playing "Cups" on repeat for the one millionth time.
