When Will Michael Bastian Debut Womenswear Line?

by Marc Cuenco

This is a game change. After years of exclusively designing menswear for his namesake label, Michael Bastian will debut womenswear at New York Fashion Week: Men's. Finally! According to his Instagram post, Bastian's first women's capsule collection will be shown as part of his NYFW: Men's runway show, taking place on July 15. The news was well received by fans of the CFDA-nominated designer's crisp and modern take on casual, all-American style.

Bastian launched his eponymous line in 2006 after serving as Bergdorf Goodman's men's fashion director for several years. In 2010, he collaborated with GANT for a successful line that includes both men's and women's clothing. It wasn't until about five years ago when he finally opened up about designing a women's collection for his own brand.

In a 2010 interview with The Cut, Bastian described his ideal womenswear collection. "I would really like to explore who the girl in my guy’s life is. I don’t want her to be his little sister — she ain’t going to be wearing khakis." Bastian's 27-piece women's capsule collection will reportedly include basics that are easy to wear and versatile for any wardrobe. The designer (and hangover expert) is focusing on classic pieces such as shirts, sweaters, and jeans that are made from high quality fabrics and materials for his debut womenswear collection.
