Why Is Pennsatucky In Jail? The 'Orange Is The New Black' Prisoner Has A History Of Violence
The moment has come. The time is now. After an entire year of waiting in desperate and anxious anticipation (starting with that weekend last June I spent watching the entire second season, glued to the couch and strewn with crumbs), Orange Is The New Black Season 3 is available on Netflix. Clear your schedule. Cancel your appointments. Have friends leave you snacks and toilet paper outside your door, because once you start watching, you'll probably be there for a while. And, in case you forgot in the year since Season 2, we've learned a lot about a few of our favorite prisoners. One backstory that was particularly interesting was the one about why Pennsatucky was in jail.
By now, it's fairly clear that every character will get their day, or at least their episode that reveals where they came from and how they ended up in jail. One of the most complex, and frankly, terrifying one of these is Tarryn Manning's Tiffany Doggett, aka Pennsatucky. The prison's resident Jesus-worshipper lived a pretty un-religious life before heading to prison. In fact, it wasn't until she was arrested that she chose to follow that path.
See, Pennsatucky was arrested for shooting an abortion clinic nurse after the nurse offended her. The clinician had made a snide comment about the number of abortions Doggett had. (The show says five, but she's shown praying over six crosses in the first episode of Season 3, so perhaps one of the times it was twins.) Anyway, Doggett got a gun from her car and killed the offending nurse. She was hailed as a Christian hero by anti-abortion extremists who rallied for her "cause" and even hired her an expert lawyer. After the outpouring of support, Pennsatucky began leading a deeply religious (and at times, misguided) lifestyle.
Will Season 3 explore her past even more? I sure hope so, because she's one of the show's most interesting characters, and there's so much more I want to know.
