Here's Why You Shouldn't Wash Your Hair Daily

by Marisa Dalpiaz

I'll be the first to admit that the most annoying part of my beauty routine is taking the time to wash my hair. The good news? There are plenty of reasons not to shampoo your hair every day. I am a huge advocate of the lazy girl beauty routine, because the less time it takes to make a good hair day happen, the more time you can spend on other things like killing it at work or hanging out with your girlfriends. For this reason, I am all about skipping a day or two (maybe even three) of washing my.

Of course, take all the beauty advice I give you with a grain of salt. Just because it works for me or because some hair expert says it should work for you doesn’t mean that it will. Everyone has a different hair type and even a different schedule for their beauty routines. The condition of our hair changes throughout our lives due to our environment, schedule, and the stresses that are happening in our life.

If you haven't tried skipping a day between washes, I think it's a good time to experiment. You might notice a difference in your hair texture and you might also find that your locks become stronger and healthier, too. Being a beauty guru isn’t always about knowing everything about every product or every trick in the book. It’s about being brave enough to try everything!

Here are eight reasons I think you should skip shampooing your hair every single day.

1. There Are Wonderful, Natural Oils In Your Hair

We are all so afraid of our hair and skin looking oily, but not all oils are bad for your hair. Your hair's natural oils will make your hair healthier and shinier than most products. Depending on how thick your hair is, it might take more time for the oils to work their way down the strands of your hair, which means you might be able to go even longer between washes than someone with thin hair. If you have thin hair like me, don't worry, because you can still go every other day without shampooing your hair.

2. Dirty Hair Is Easier To Style

There's a reason that hair stylist usually advise that you come into the hair salon with "dirty" hair when you book an appointment for a special service. From blowouts to updos, hair styles work better when you don't wash it. All of your curls will stay in place better and those pesky flyaways are easier to tame. You'll find that my favorite lazy girl hairstyles, like topknots and boho braids, do not work as easily for gals with over-shampooed, clean hair (just saying).

3. Your Color Will Last Longer And Look Fresher

If you have colored your hair recently, you are doing yourself a serious disservice by over shampooing your hair every day. Your hair color will look better if you shampoo your hair less often, especially because shampoos with sulfates can cause your color to fade or strip your hair of its fabulous new color completely.

4. Your Hair Will Look Better Overall

Not only will the bold styles you attempt hold up better (see #2 above), everything about your hair will look better in general. If you are nervous about not using any product in your hair at all for the day or if you think your hair looks "greasy" (remember not all oils are bad), use a little dry shampoo or baby powder at your roots. Fellow Bustler Miki Hayes knows a thing or two about dry shampoo and you can definitely refer to her for great advice about the product.

5. There Will Be Less Product Build-Up

The bad kind of oils that cause that greasy look in your hair is more than likely resulting from a build up of too many hair products. There is always an adjustment period when changing up your beauty routine. If you commit trying out this process and discovering what happens, you will notice that your hair is less greasy in between shampoo days.

6. You'll Have Less Heat Damage

If you don't wash your hair, then you don't have to blow dry your hair, which means less heat damage for your locks. Besides, if you are sticking to an every other day routine (for starters) than your hair probably still looks amazing from yesterday. No blow dryer necessary.

7. You'll Spend Less Money

The less you shampoo your hair, the less shampoo you will need to buy. You might also be able to go longer in between appointments with your hair stylist, too, if your hair is looking healthier and your color is staying fresh longer.

8. You'll Save Time

If I am going to wash my hair, it can take me up to two full hours to get ready. Showering, blow-drying, styling, getting dressed, putting on makeup — it's all very time consuming. Choosing not to wash my hair cuts my getting ready time in half. Who doesn't love that?
