Is Demi's Latest Single The New "I Kissed A Girl"?

by Alex Kritselis

This is the moment you've been waiting for, Lovatics: Demi Lovato's new single, "Cool for the Summer," is here — and you won't be able to take it off repeat. The "Heart Attack" performer's latest offering premiered online on Monday evening, and I think it has all the makings of a massive hit. Slick production? Check. Catchy chorus? Check. Sexy lyrics? Double check. What makes Demi Lovato's "Cool for the Summer" lyrics so sexy? They describe a summertime fling that's getting seriously hot and heavy. On the first verse and pre-chorus, Lovato sings:

Tell me what you want, what you like

It's OK

I'm a little curious, too

Tell me if it's wrong, if it's right

I don't care

I can keep a secret

Can you?

Got my mind on your body

And your body on my mind

Got a taste for the cherry

I just need to take a bite

Don't tell your mother

Kiss one another

Die for each other

We're cool for the summer

A killer guitar riff kicks in just as the track launches into its turbo-charged chorus:

Take me down into your paradise

Don't be scared, 'cause I'm your body type

Just something that we wanna try

'Cause you and I

We're cool for the summer

The first time I listened to "Cool for the Summer," I got major déjà vu. "Where have I heard this song before?" I wondered. I was racking my brain. Then, suddenly, it dawned on me: the "Cool for the Summer" lyrics have a lot in common with Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" lyrics! Just take a look at all of the similarities:

Exhibit A: I'm Curious About You

"I Kissed a Girl": "I'm curious for you/Caught my attention..."

"Cool for the Summer": "Tell me what you want, what you like/It's OK/I'm a little curious, too..."

Exhibit B: I'm Trying You Out

"I Kissed a Girl": "It's not what I'm used to/Just wanna try you on..."

"Cool for the Summer": "Take me down into your paradise/Don't be scared, 'cause I'm your body type/Just something that we wanna try..."

Exhibit C: This Is Just For Fun

"I Kissed a Girl": "Ain't no big deal, it's innocent..."

"Cool for the Summer": "I just wanna have some fun with you..."

Exhibit D: Uh, Cherry References?

"I Kissed a Girl": "I kissed a girl and I liked it/The taste of her cherry chapstick..."

"Cool for the Summer": "Got a taste for the cherry/I just need to take a bite..."

Is "Cool for the Summer" also about hooking up with a woman? It's possible. I have a feeling the upcoming music video will make things clear. Until then, we can only speculate. Stay tuned.

"Cool for the Summer" hits iTunes on July 1.
