Melisandre Says Jon Snow Lives

by Maitri Suhas

You may have thought you'd stopped thinking about Jon Snow's dubious fate for one minute, think again. Because another Game Of Thrones cast member Carice Van Houten, aka Melisandre, has said her piece about the Lord Commander's death, and she thinks it's impossible that he's gone for good. The Sun reported that at London Film and Comic Con this weekend, Van Houten said of Jon Snow: "No, he can't be dead. No!" I can't believe I'm saying it, but I totally hope that Melisandre is right.

But will it be the Red Woman that brings the Lord Commander back from the dead? Of course, when asked, Van Houten was as vague as the mysterious woman she plays in the HBO series: "I’ve seen that on the internet; like I’ve seen stuff saying 'we’ll forgive you if you save him.'" Personally, Melisandre is in my "forever grudge" column after she convinced Stannis Baratheon to burn his own sweet, innocent daughter Shireen at the stake, but she is one of the only players in the game of thrones that has supernatural abilities.

Yes, some of her magic is dubious. You might ask — if Melisandre really can have visions, how did she not see Stannis' death coming? But there are some tricks that the Red Priestess has up her sleeve that we cannot deny, like when she gave birth to an evil shadow baby that murdered Renly Baratheon. That was evil not of this world, and spooked the crap out of even a great warrior like Brienne of Tarth.

And one of the most popular theories about Jon Snow's resurrection (by now, the theories must number in the hundreds) is the Melisandre theory. Now that she's lost Stannis, will Melisandre seek a new candidate for the run of the throne. She believed that Stannis was Azor Ahai reborn, but obviously, with his death, she's doubting himself. That's where Jon Snow comes in... the mystery of Jon Snow's birth was front and center in Season 5, and from it emerged the R + L = J theory that is so sound it seems like it almost has to be true. That is, that Jon Snow is not a Stark or a Snow at all, but a Targaryen — one of the last living dragons. Plus, Melisandre and Jon Snow came face to face in Season 5, and the Red Woman definitely had more than a watchful, scheming eye on the Lord Commander.

If anything, I would love for Melisandre to bring back Jon Snow so we can get more awkward dialogue, like when she asked him if he were a virgin. Let's hope that the Lord of Light helps Melisandre bring back our Lord Commander. The night is dark, and full of hope that Jon Snow is really not dead, because to put it simply: HE JUST CAN'T BE.
