These National Dog Day Tweets Are The Heckin’ Best

by Madeleine Aggeler

In these troubled times, it can sometimes feel like there is nothing good or pure left in this world. Until, that is, you take a look at some of these tweets and memes from National Dog Day, and your faith in humanity (or at least in puppers) is temporarily restored.

National Dog Day began in 2004 by a woman named Colleen Paige, who picked August 26th because it was the date her family adopted their first dog. According to the National Dog Day website, the purpose of the day is to celebrate "all breeds, pure and mixed and serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, either from public shelters, rescues and pure breed rescues." It also honors working dogs who "put their lives on the line every day — for their law enforcement partner, for their blind companion, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage."

So whether have zero pups or twelve floofers, an adopted mutt or a fancy purebred, a working dog, or (like me) a sleepy dog who prefers naps above all else, enjoy these tweets of some extremely good doggos, and if you have one, give the pup in your life an extra treat today.
