The Grammys are like the Oscars of the music industry when it comes to the clothes. It's where the fanciest and most couture dresses happen, unless, of course, you're Beyonce in 2013 and you elect to rock a pantsuit. If you've never watched the American Music Awards, you should know they are a bit edgier, looser, and a touch more fun than the Grammys when it comes to fashion. All of the looks of the 2017 AMAs remind us of that undeniable sartorial fact.
Artists and celebs, from Pink to Kelly Clarkson to Jessie James Decker to Hailee Steinfeld to Demi Lovato to Selena Gomez turned up in droves at the event, which always lands on the Sunday before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Some trends that asserted themselves at this years event were '90s inspo in both accessories and hair and makeup, from chokers to stick straight hair to vampy lipstick, and dresses with lots of sequins that were anything but dated. Hair that was slicked back and looked wet was another coif trend.
While previous AMAs ceremonies can be remembered for Kendall Jenner's faked bangs, Kylie Jenner's dominatrix-y, leather and chains ensemble, and Gigi Hadid's faux bob, there were lots of memorable, head-turning ensembles at the 2017 American Music Awards, all of which are laid out below.
Selena Gomez
The evening's most unpredictable moment was Selena Gomez's white blonde lob. She ditched her usual, sleek 'n' chic, glossy 'n' long locks in favor of this bedhead 'do. She paired it with a supremely sexy leather LBD with zippers, which showed off legs for days. Gomez served up a lewk, for sure.
Diana Ross
Original diva Diana Ross, mother of the evening's host Tracee Ellis Ross, was receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, so of course she showed up with an outfit that that would get people talking and "oohing" and "aahing." The singer rocked a an all-black ensemble, complete with that epic head piece of which Lady Gaga would certainly approve. She added a '90s touch with the choker.
Tracee Ellis Ross
Ellis Ross wore a sequined and backless burgundy dress with long sleeves and the sexy fabric looked like liquid. Those dramatic, Old Hollywood, and crimson lips were va-va-voooom!
Kelly Clarkson
The original American Idol rocked vampy purple lips, '00s flat-ironed hair, and a black frock with gold sequin detail.
Chrissy Metz
The This Is Us star was stoked to rub elbows with the music peeps at the AMAs. She looked gorg in her LBD with the blue fringed sleeves and hem.
Pink
Pink was pink in multiple ways — from her pastel hair to her coral-hued, tiered gown with appliques.
Demi Lovato
The singer opted for a curve-hugging, sheer black dress in a mermaid silhouette that was her unique take on the naked dress trend. Her long, flowing black locks matched the shape and hue of her dress and that likely wasn't an accident.
Ciara
Rawr! Ciara's glossy LBD and knee-high boots were perfectly matched and sexy AF.
Lea Michelle
The former Glee star elected to rock this soft, millennial pink dress, which featured delicate pleating and an embellished bustier. The blush shade popped against her olive skin.
Bebe Rexha
Sheer, black, sparkly, strapless, and strappy. That was the singer's AMAs ensemble from top to bottom.
Jessie James Decker
The pregnant singer was stunning as she cradled her bump in a rosy, off-the-shoulder dress.
Kelly Rowland
The onetime Destiny's Child singer showed off a slit for days with her black frock and super long strands. Extra-long locks were another trend, as evidenced by the Kellys — Rowland and Clarkson— as well as Ciara and D. Lovato.
Ashlee Simpson
Remember what we said about sequins? They ruled the red carpet and A. Simpson's multi-hued dress. The frock moved with the platinum-haired singer.
Jenna Dewan Tatum
The actor and wife of Channing Tatum shimmered in her golden gown.
Hailee Steinfeld
Pitch perfect! That was Steinfeld's pantsuit, with its powerful, structured shoulders. Her slicked back, wet-look hair softened the angles of her blazer.
What a fun night for fashion, indeed.
