Chrissy Metz's Upcoming Movie Role May Make You Cry As Much As 'This Is Us'
If you're a fan of NBC's This Is Us (series writing: Kay Oyegun), you know Chrissy Metz as the strong, kind-hearted Kate Pearson. But the actor is making career moves outside the TV drama, too. Metz just landed her first leading role in a feature film — she'll star in the upcoming movie The Impossible from Fox 2000, according to Deadline.
If the title of the project sounds familiar, that's because it's based on Joyce Smith's book, The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother's Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection. The memoir is based on Smith's account of her son's own near-death experience. By her account, Smith's 14-year-old son John recovered after being declared lifeless. According to Smith's account in the book, John fell through a frozen Missouri lake and was taken to a local hospital. Smith prayed at his side until his recovery, when his heart miraculously started beating once more. In the upcoming movie, Metz will play Joyce Smith.
The movie's supporting cast has yet to be announced, but The Impossible has already drawn some big names behind the scenes. The movie will be directed by Roxann Dawson, whose credits include The Americans and The Deuce. Seven Pounds screenwriter Grant Nieporte will write the screenplay, and Miracles From Heaven's DeVon Franklin will produce the film. Expect to hear more about The Impossible soon, too — filming is scheduled to start in Canada next month.
Metz was mostly unknown before joining This Is Us — she told Glamour that before being cast on the show, she had just 81 cents in her bank account. She'd appeared in American Horror Story: Freak Show, but This Is Us was truly her breakout role. And even though the show is only in its second season, Metz has already cemented herself as a serious force in the entertainment industry. She's been nominated for an Emmy and two Golden Globes for her work on This Is Us — and that's just the beginning. The This Is Us cast also recently took home a win for their Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at the 2018 SAG Awards, so it's safe to say none of them are going away anytime soon.
In addition to being cast in The Impossible, Metz will soon be starring on stage, too. She'll lead a revival of Neil LaBute's play Fat Pig at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles later this year.
Metz has been working on her own project behind the scenes, too — her book, This Is Me: Loving The Person You Are Today, will be released by HarperCollins' Dey Street Books in March. The book promises an inside look at Metz's past, including her family life as well as her struggle to land auditions when she first moved to Los Angeles.
Fans are thrilled to see Metz making so many awesome career moves, too. When news broke about her upcoming movie, people were quick to share their excitement.
Fans of both Metz and director Dawson are especially excited about the news.
Metz's fans will be excited to learn that she'll appear in another upcoming movie, too. Metz will act in Netflix's upcoming Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, which will feature Shannon Purser in the titular role.
Metz is a breath of fresh air on the small screen, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that fans want to see her in movie roles, too. Her rise to success in the entertainment world shows that fans are eager to see more representation in movies and TV — here's hoping these two movies mark the first steps in a lucrative movie career for her.
