Can you imagine a world in which Mrs. Potts and the 45th president of the United States dated? Yeah, it's something I certainly can't picture, but guess what? It could've very well happened. During a Thursday appearance on Swedish talk show Skavlan, Emma Thompson said Donald Trump once asked her out. It's not so surprising that Trump allegedly asked her out, because, well, come on. What is kind of shocking is that the Beauty and the Beast star wish she wouldn't have denied him. Bustle has reached out to reps for Trump for comment, but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
While filming the 1998 movie Primary Colors with John Travolta (the movie was loosely based on Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign) in Los Angeles, Thompson said Trump allegedly phoned her to ask her out. "I was in my trailer and it was on the Universal lot. I'd just been divorced [from Kenneth Branagh] and my decree absolute had just come through like the day before, which was no big deal." She went on to explain how her phone rang in her trailer, which never happened before. The Oscar winner said it was "like a moose had just entered my trailer."
She continued (and in a poor Trump accent), "I lift up the phone: 'Hi. It’s Donald Trump here.' I said, 'Really? What? Can I help you?'" The Harry Potter actor claimed Trump then said, "'Yeah, I just wondered if I could offer you some accommodation in one of my Trump Towers. They're really comfortable.'"
Thompson then asked him, "Why are you offering me somewhere to stay in my trailer?" To which she claimed Trump replied, "Well, you know, I think we would get on very well, maybe we could have dinner some time." Like I think most anyone would be, Thompson was shocked and said, "I didn’t know what to do with myself!" So she did what any logical person would do. The 57-year-old told Trump that she'd get back to him and then hung up. She never called him back, nor did they ever go on a date.
Thank goodness. Thompson and Trump on a date? I don't think that would've gone very well. She also made it clear that before that phone call, she never met him. And she still has yet to meet him.
All of that said, the Nanny McPhee star kind of regrets not pursuing it. "I wish I had," she admitted about the date. Though, it's not for the reason you may be thinking. She added, "Think of the stories!" Ha!
As host Fredrik Skavlan said, "You could be the first lady." The other woman guest said, "You could have stopped him." Isn't that the truth. Obviously, Thompson would make a fantastic first lady who would do things like this and make the world a better place, but I think we all can agree that Thompson dodged a bullet.
