How To Vote For New Monopoly Pieces
We're about to help make history, folks, because new Monopoly pieces are on the horizon — and we get to pick 'em. Hasbro has recently announced a campaign to let the fans choose from over 50 possible tokens, explaining how to vote for new Monopoly pieces and when they'll be able to get them. I mean, yes, the top hat will always be a classic — but sometimes, you just want something a little more current, you know?
Here's the sitch. As you're likely aware, Monopoly currently uses eight pieces: the Scottie dog, top hat, car, thimble, boot, wheelbarrow, cat, and battleship. Their fates are undecided, however, because starting today (Jan. 10) and ending Jan. 31, fans will get to participate in the Monopoly Token Madness Vote to choose the next generation's eight tokens. In a press release, Hasbro explains that the 50+ possible options include the current eight, plus a bunch of new ones, including a penguin, bunny slipper, rubber ducky, TV, T-Rex, and — because Hasbro is hip and cool and up with the times — a number of possible emoji pieces.
All you have to do to cast your vote is go to VoteMonopoly.com, click "Go!", and start selecting your favorites. The results of the voting will be announced on World Monopoly Day, which is March 19; you can expect to see the updated pieces in the new version of the game come August.
Seriously, how awesome are these?
Monopoly has been a staple for millions of families for generations; as such, it would make sense if some of us were sad to see the present eight go. Fortunately, for fans of the current tokens, you won't have to totally say goodbye to the Scottie dog and his pals: Hasbro has released the Monopoly Token Madness Edition, which includes the eight classic pieces, plus eight more from the bunch that are currently up for voting. These additional eight pieces are golden colored, too, because... well, you know what they say about making new friends and keeping the old, right?
Plus, there's always the chance that some (or even all!) of the current tokens will stay put right where they are, if enough people vote for them.
The Monopoly Token Madness Vote truly is an opportunity to be a part of history. The board game was first introduced in 1935, and the car, thimble, boot, top hat, and battleship have all been here since its inception. While fans have had the opportunity to vote in the past — (for example, in 2013, the cat replaced the iron) — a move of this magnitude might be the first of its kind, changing the face of Monopoly as we know it. The emoji tokens in particular seem like a definite promise that while Hasbro is committed to the game we've all come to know and love, they're also committed to including the younger generations of today as part of the ever-growing group of Monopoly lovers.
