There Was A Photoshoot Of Trump "Hard At Work" During The Shutdown & Twitter Is LOLing

The government might be shut down, but the White House would like you to know that Trump is hard at work — on the phone, in meetings with young staffers, and solemnly walking toward the Oval Office. In all the photos of Trump released after the government shutdown he has a stoic look on his face, his dress shirt unbuttoned, and a white "Make America Great Again" hat on his head.

Press Secretary Sarah Sanders wrote on Twitter that Trump is "hard at work today to end the Democrat shutdown, reopen our government, and fund our great military." The Republicans, who control both houses of Congress, did not have the necessary votes to pass a new budget, which led to the shutdown. In the Senate, Republicans need some Democratic votes to get to 60 votes in favor. Then that version has to be approved by the House, too, which has more rightwing GOP members to contend with.

Trump has tried to blame the lack of agreement on Democrats. "This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present," Trump tweeted on Saturday with the hashtag #DemocratShutdown. Most polls show past shutdowns have always been blamed on Republicans, and this year they have complete control over Washington.

This situation has Twitter losing it — and the reaction has been fierce, sarcastic, and incredulous. Some have pointed out how nothing that he seems to be doing would actually end the shutdown. Others noted that his desk has no papers on it, and he more resembles someone waiting on hold.

Who He's Speaking With

The other end of the line.

It's A Long Walk Back To The Residence

It's like when you're looking for your glasses, but you're already wearing them.

You Better Work

Past photos of Trump working weren't so different.

The Hat & The Office

Past presidents have refrained from wearing hats inside the Oval.

If The Situation Were Reversed

Obama would never hear the end of it.

The Official Email Said It All

No added snark necessary.

Also on Saturday, congressional leaders got together to talk about how to make a compromise to end the shutdown. A continued spending resolution seems more and more likely, which would provide money until February.

But if Trump had his way, that wouldn't happen — as he tweeted early Sunday morning:

Republicans should go to 51% (Nuclear Option) and vote on real, long term budget, no C.R.'s!

The government shutdown may not end any time soon, and thus this may not be the end of "at work" photos.
