The most magical red carpet event of the year is almost here. The MTV Video Music Awards is the time celebrities rock jaw-dropping outfits that truly let their personality shine. And there have been some very, uh, big personalities over the years. Don't believe me? Maybe the most bizarre VMA outfits of all times will remind you. Because I'm all for letting your wild side shine, but not all self-expression always makes the most sense.

When it comes to the VMAs, you just never know what to expect. What started as a red carpet event to nail the latest trends has morphed into a way to surprise and shock through fashion. That's part of what makes the award show so entertaining. From meat dresses to sequin minis with ex-presidents on them, anything goes at the VMAs.

While some of the designs speak for themselves, others are meant to spread a bigger message. No matter what the reasoning, one thing is for sure — there have been some pretty outrageous outfits over the years.

Let's just say if you're not already planning on watching this year's awards show, the most bizarre VMA looks ever will change your mind.

Two years later and I still have no idea what is going on with this outfit. When Cyrus hosted the VMAs in 2015, she had a whole slew of interesting looks.

Gray had no shame in making sure everyone knew about her upcoming album back in 2001.

It wouldn't be a complete list without Gaga's 2010 meat dress. Iconic.

The outfits were outlandish even in the '90s. In the last year of that decade, Lil' Kim showed up with half a shirt.

Another 2015 look from Cyrus because this year was, uh, bold.

This seemingly strange pair rolled up to the 2014 VMA red carpet wearing all-denim designs that mimicked the creations Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake wore to the 2001 American Music Awards.
