Ayesha Is A Powerful Villain In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2'

by Allie Gemmill

It's almost time to get hooked on a feeling once again with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While there will be plenty of familiar faces returning to the intergalactic realm of the Guardians of the Galaxy, there's also some new ones popping up. In the trailer, we actually get our first look at golden-faced Ayesha, the villain in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Just who is Ayesha, though, and why is she facing off against the Guardians?

Played by Elizabeth Debicki, of The Night Manager and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. fame, Ayesha presides over a group called The Sovereign. Debicki had the chance to explain Ayesha further in an interview with Collider while Vol. 2 was still shooting:

Ayesha is the golden High Priestess of a genetically-perfect people called the Sovereign. She’s not a woman to be screwed with – she, and her entire world, are extraordinarily deadly.

The character sounds like she has a real big axe to grind with the Guardians, who are the definition of endearingly imperfect beings. In the trailer for Vol. 2, we see Ayesha warning Starlord, telling him she "see[s] it within [him]: Fear. Jealousy. Betrayal." Despite Starlord's nonchalant response, she goes on to tell him "it is our duty to cleanse the universe of this weakness." Yeesh, this woman doesn't go easy, does she?

From what we've seen of Ayesha thus far, it looks like Starlord's charm and Drax's blunt honesty will not be able to save the Guardians from her wrath. Nor am I inclined to think that having a reasonable chat with a woman bent on cleansing the galaxy of fear with destruction will be very productive. With reports coming out that the Guardians will be split up and forced to fight their way back to one another, it sounds like Ayesha's wrath will be a truly destructive force.
