In years past, it seemed like long hair was the thing to have on the red carpet. Everywhere you looked there was a flowing mane, long ponytail, or cascade of curls. But this year there were so many short hairstyles on the Oscars red carpet it was almost impossible to keep track of them.
Aside from the fact short hair is cool AF, it really does make perfect sense to go short for the red carpet. The look — whether it be a bob, a pixie cut, or shaved sides — is perfect for showing off at award shows. Not only is it super flattering for the brave woman who decide to get the ol' "chop," but it also has a way of showing off beautiful jewelry, makeup, and outfits in a way long hair simply can't.
Take Janelle Monae, for example. The singer/actress walked the red carpet in a sheer gown that had a lot going on. If her hair was long it would have detracted from the look, hidden her pretty high neckline, and made the whole thing look busy.
Maybe that's one reason why it seemed like so many actresses seemed to channel short-haired ladies from years gone by. While short hair almost always brings to mind the likes of Audrey Hepburn (who made the pixie cut "a thing"), there were so many other women famous for their short, gorgeous hair. Take a look below at some of the gorg actresses from Oscars night, and see if you don't think they stole their look from someone else.
1. Scarlett Johansson Channeling Pink's Pompadour
Pink is one of the first ladies I think of when I imagine "short hair." The singer has had some version of a pixie cut or shaved head for years — and she's been looking damn good doing it. She may have been a source of inspiration for Johansson, especially since the actress went for Pink's signature pompadour.
2. Janelle Monae Bringing To Mind Halle Berry Circa 2002
Sheer dresses aside, it's hard not to see the resemblance between Janelle Monae's adorable short hair and Halle Berry's iconic look from her 2002 Oscar win. The pixie is equally flattering on both, so much so that I'm currently wondering why I don't have a pixie cut, too.
3. Viola Davis Rocking Bangs Like Rihanna
Remember Rihanna's short hair days? Me too. The singer looks great with short hair — especially with some side swept bangs framing her face. And so does Viola Davis, who was definitely channeling Rihanna with her pretty short look.
4. Michelle Williams Pulling Off The "Ginnifer Goodwin"
Both stars have rocked short hair over the years, but no one does the pixie cut quite like Ginnifer Goodwin. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's her look. Both ladies, however, pull it off with ease.
4. Charlize Theron Sweeping Like Miley Cyrus
Even though she has a tiny ponytail in the back, I think we can safely call Charlize Theron's hair short. Combine it with the fact it's blond and long on top, it's also safe to say she was inspired by Miley Cyrus — who famously chopped off her hair in 2012.
6. Halle Berry Curling It Up Like Diana Ross
Halle Berry strolled onto the red carpet with her bad self, and I instantly thought she looked like the beautiful singer, Diana Ross. What do you think? Don't her curls look just as fab?
7. Taraji P. Henson Glamming It Up Like Michelle Obama
While not a perfect match, it's hard not to look at Taraji P. Henson's glam look and think of the loveliness that is Michelle Obama. Over the years, the former First Lady wore her hair in some incredible bobs. Perhaps it's possible Henson took a page from her book?
