'Dynasty' Is Adding New Characters, So Prepare For Drama

Everything old is new again, huh? Your favorite shows from the past are getting reboots and revivals, and even the padded-shoulder-mavens at Dynasty are at it again. The show’s reboot on The CW has been fresh and modern in its first season, with plenty of nods to the original show that set the Dynasty name on fire. It also doesn’t skimp on the drama which is why everyone watched the original in the first place. The first half of the first season is wrapping up, and will likely do so with a dramatic cliffhanger. So, when does Dynasty Season 1 come back after its winter hiatus?

You don’t have to wait too long to dive back into the drama of the Carringtons and the Colbys — The CW announced that Dynasty will return with new episodes on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018. Four weeks isn’t too long of a break for fans, which is good since the show is a welcome addition to fans' weeks. The latest big reveal of the show is that Claudia, the dearly departed Matthew’s widow, was actually behind his demise all along. She fake a head injury and amnesia when she found out that he was cheating on her just so she could get revenge on Matthew, Cristal, and by proxy, the Carrington family. I’m a longtime viewer of soaps of the daytime and primetime variety, and even I didn’t realize that would be the reveal.

Claudia was locked up in an asylum after she held everyone at gunpoint, but since she has a baby in her belly, it’s a safe bet that Claudia and said baby will come back into our lives soon. Executive producer Sallie Patrick echoed this sentiment to TV Line. “Claudia is one of my favorite characters from the original show, so it just made sense to arc the story out this way. We have a few more big characters we’re introducing, including Alexis, so we’ll see Claudia again when she comes back to stir the pot after Alexis is settled in,” Patrick said. This is something to look forward to, especially for original Dynasty fans tuning into the show for a blast from the past.

Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz are the showrunners behind The CW's Dynasty — and they’ve put together such classic, amazing series of television like Gossip Girl and The O.C. Seriously, the pedigree is amazing. But these shows were also known for jumping the shark. On one hand, fearing that Dynasty will follow the same overwrought path is a valid concern, but on the other, it’s a show about excess, so why not embrace said excess? Deadline announced that Dynasty has indeed gotten an order to finish out the season, so get ready for more over-the-top drama soon.

And, get ready to see some familiar faces, too. TVLine announced that Kelly Rutherford, aka Lily Rhodes van der Woodsen Bass, would be joining the cast for an arc. Rutherford is set to play Melissa Daniels, “Whose seemingly perfect marriage to a powerful senator is revealed to be nothing more than a face-saving sham. In private, she’s actually a ‘spiraling lush’ whose life story serves as a cautionary tale to Cristal about the dangers of marrying men in high places.” I love a good cautionary tale! General Hospital star Rick Hearst instagrammed a photo of a Dynasty script, so he’s been cast, too, but no word on his character details.

With such an over-the-top show, fans don't really know what to expect next on Dynasty (I would love more Anders and Sammy Jo pairings, personally), but I know that whatever it is, it will be campy and over-the-top and delightfully dramatic when it returns in January.
