A 2016 interview with Mr Porter notes that Welsh actor Luke Evans, who plays Gaston in the new live-action remake of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, was single. However, the actor also said that he prefers to not to discuss his private life — so we may never actually know whether or not Luke Evans is dating anyone. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Evans, he’s had high profile roles in movies like Dracula Untold, The Hobbit, Furious 7, and most recently he starred alongside Emily Blunt in The Girl on the Train. As you can tell, he’s becoming quite the A-list celeb, and with multiple more films in pre and post-production, we’re definitely going to be seeing plenty more of him in the years to come. Unfortunately for those of us nosy fans, it doesn't seem like we'll ever get the chance to know when he has a special someone in his life or not.
While speaking with Mr Porter, Evans said:
The interview notes that he is single, and Evans explained that he's currently using the opportunity for "finding contentment with myself, and not relying on anybody else to validate it."
"I think being an only child has hindered that slightly," he continued, "because I’ve always wanted to be around other people."
Earlier on in his career Evans actually spoke more openly about his romantic life. In a 2002 interview with The Advocate, he spoke of a former boyfriend and his decision to be open about his sexuality. "I knew I was going to have to do interviews with gay magazines," the actor explained. "I knew this was going to happen. So I thought, Well, I'm going to have to be open. It's who I am."
However, as his career has blossomed, it seems as though Evans has decided to be somewhat more tight-lipped. "It’s not something he is hiding," his publicist told Women's Wear Daily about Evans' sexual orientation in 2014, "but not a fact he wishes to discuss in the press."
I personally find it a little disappointing, being a fellow out gay man, that Evans no longer discusses his personal life in public. As an action star, he defies the stereotype that gay men aren't tough, and I think it would be great for younger members of the LGBTQ community to see a high-profile movie star who's open about their personal life. But maybe it's just a timing thing? Perhaps if Evans finds love and a partner in life, then he'll be more open to discussing it. Even if not, Evans has spoken about the fact that he's gay, and is still being cast in roles in big budget films, which is definitely a good thing.
